Digital Science
Advancing the research ecosystem. Together, we make open, collaborative and inclusive research possible.
A big welcome to the latest edition of The Download, the Digital Science newsletter for the publishing community. We’re very happy to share our latest news and updates with you.
Varied layers of (Altmetric) attention
The Altmetric 500 is a new initiative that digs into the context of research output and the detailed measures of attention per source. Built using the recently released Altmetric on Google’s BigQuery (GBQ), the data can be tweaked or customized by anyone with a license to the data. This can help publishers understand how, where and by whom their published content is being shared across numerous different channels.
A complete view of researcher reach
Dimensions is well-known for its robust interlinked data, offering rich and in-depth data about publications, grants, patents and more over the entire span of a research career. But how can this be used to track often messy research records as authors move around from institution to institution? In a new article, we show how Dimensions can help answer questions including where researchers have worked, who they collaborate with and what is being said about their work.
Catalyst Grant launches
Following its successful return last year, we have launched our Catalyst Grant campaign again in 2024. Offering a £25,000 prize for innovative ideas, this year’s theme is on research integrity. Submissions are sought for technological solutions that are driven by a need to address integrity issues, including plagiarism, falsification, research ethics, publication ethics & authorship, financial mis-management & conflicts of interest. Now more than ever, we want to support the scientific community in finding new ways to ensure integrity in research.

Altmetric in action
Two new case studies on Altmetric look at how it can be used successfully in different contexts. With the centuries-old Royal Society, the case study shows how its publishing arm uses Altmetric to identify articles for promotion, track performance of content, and curate special collections. With the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) case study, we see how the Association leverages Altmetric to demonstrate the impact of its research articles to authors and benchmark against competitor journals.
