Digital Science
Advancing the research ecosystem. Together, we make open, collaborative and inclusive research possible.
Welcome to the second edition of THE Download, our newsletter for the academic community.?
In this first edition of 2024, we delve into the realm of AI - looking at ways to build trust and address silos - as well as highlighting how we’ve joined in the celebrations of women in science, and announcing winners of The 2023 Catalyst Grant.
Future forward: Winners of 2023 Catalyst Grant announced
For the last 13 years, we have supported entrepreneurs in developing new solutions in the research ecosystem, investing over £250,000 in that time in the shape of Catalyst Grants. Some winners in the past have become part of Digital Science such as academic writing app Writefull. The awards for 2023 were announced on 22nd February, going to Atom Grants and Futuremetrics.
Celebrating women in science
February 11th marked the 9th Annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which celebrates the achievements of women in science and supported girls in their pursuit of STEM-related subjects. Watch an interview between Dr Suze Kundu and Professor Dame Athene Donald who discuss how a career in STEM is “Not Just For The Boys”, and how an underrepresentation of any group of society can impact the research being done.
How to build confidence in using AI
We are dedicated to developing ethical AI tools for researchers. This week we launched two new AI-powered solutions: Dimensions Research GPT and Dimensions Research GPT Enterprise. By combining ChatGPT’s user-friendly interface with the power of Dimensions, the world’s largest collection of linked research data, researchers gain a reliable resource for answering their research questions.
Social sciences add flavor to research menu
A new report has shown that social science research is an essential complement to STEM research. The Academy of Social Sciences study - co-authored by Digital Science and using Dimensions data - was commissioned to provide universities and research managers with evidence on how the social sciences can add value to other research areas with four key ‘ingredients’.
Silos and collaboration in AI
In the latest of a series of blog posts on the fragmentation of research through the lens of AI, Digital Science’s Senior Data Scientist Dr Hélène Draux looks at Applied AI and interconnectedness of publications across AI-related Fields of Research over the past decade. To find out where there are silos, but where there is also cross-pollination of research.
