This is fantastic news and it will hopefully be the start of the journey towards implementing practical guidelines and regulations within South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA). Whale sharks were previously designated as a protected species under the Fisheries Act of the #Maldives but following the observation that the Maldivian #fishing industry nor fishing industries worldwide regarded whale sharks as a viable fishery species, the cabinet paper proposed that the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act of Maldives would provide the most effective framework for the #conservation and management of whale sharks instead.
Back in August 2021 it was sad news when The Panamanian cargo ship, MV Navios Amaryllis, ran aground on Rasfari Reef due to engine failure. Today's news is much more positive with a #restoration program now underway. Rasfari is an island on which telecommunication work is carried out. The island and the reef surrounding it have been declared protected since September 27, 1995. The area is famous amongst divers and one of the most environmentally diverse areas in Kaafu Atoll; with sightings of endangered species in the Maldives such as rays, sharks and turtles.
In a significant step towards #marineconservation, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the Maldives has introduced amendments to regulations governing interactions with protected species, including turtles and rays during snorkeling activities. The revised guidelines emphasize maintaining a safe distance of six feet between snorkelers and sea turtles, with strict prohibitions against any actions that may disrupt their natural behavior.
In a heartening rescue mission, an endangered Maldivian Black Turtle, listed on the country's red list since 1993, was found on the streets of Malé City and safely transported to its natural habitat in Kaafu Kaashidhoo. Swift action ensured the turtle's safe release into the wetlands of Kaashidhoo, a vital habitat for this rare species. Kaashidhoo's lush wetlands, home to diverse wildlife, offer an ideal sanctuary for this endangered species, further underlining the importance of conservation initiatives in the region.

We were encouraged to see this great opportunity for for Maldivians interested in a career in marine science. Funded through the UK’s Blue Planet Fund, these scholarships aim to provide a distinctive opportunity for students from the Maldives to pursue fully funded Master’s programs in #marinescience. Hosted at The University of the South Pacific, the scholarships intend to equip students with the technical expertise necessary to engage in research, fostering solutions to marine environmental challenges.
We love that national #heritage will now be celebrated annually. It's a crucial step in ensuring that the understanding and importance of heritage is passed on to future generations. In a destination that continues to develop, it is vitally important that the national identity of the Maldives is not lost along the way.
