News on integrative lighting!

On September 16, 2024, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) released a new version of its Position Statement on Integrative Lighting. It is a topic that is gaining momentum, and this is already the third edition of this document.

This update is based on previous work from 2019. What's new?

The CIE has been working hard to bring all this research into the real world. Their new statement is titled “Recommending the right light at the right time,” and it summarizes the recommendations for integrative lighting. What are they? Let's see:

• Quality of light: It is emphasized that good lighting is key to our well-being. It is like finding the perfect balance between feeling good, taking care of our health and being respectful of the environment.
• Standards: The statement stresses the importance of following the CIE S 026:2018 standard to understand how light influences our bodies. This is key to taking advantage of the non-visual effects of light.
• Practical tips: A group of experts suggested that we should expose ourselves to a lot of light during the day, but lower that exposure in the hours before bedtime – and almost turn everything off while we sleep!
• Importance of design: To offer quality lighting, it is essential to design spaces that avoid glare and manage energy use efficiently.
