IATEFL Monthly webinar:

Introducing a competency framework for language learning materials writing is the topic for our June webinar and is presented by Sandy Millin

Head shot of presenter Sandy Millin

This webinar will introduce a competency framework which language teaching professionals can use in a range of different ways. The framework can be used for planning professional development and training, including identifying gaps in personal knowledge or team competencies. The framework is also designed to support professionalisation of language learning materials writing.

About the presenter: Sandy Millin is a freelance ELT trainer, consultant and methodology writer. She is proud to be an IATEFL Ambassador and is a joint events coordinator for MaWSIG. She completed her NILE MA in Professional Development in Language Education in October 2023 with Distinction.

Sandy is the creator of Take Your Time DELTA, a less stressful way to complete Cambridge DELTA Modules 1 and 3. She is the co-author of The CELTA Course Book Trainee Book and Trainer’s Manual second edition for Cambridge University Press, with Peter Watkins and Scott Thornbury. She has self-published Richer Speaking, ELT Playbook 1 and ELT Playbook Teacher Training.

Equitable Assessments for Multilingual Learners: Integrating Socioculturally Responsive and Personalized Assessment Approaches

Primary and secondary schools are increasingly “superdiverse” in the U.S. and globally (Park et al., 2018; Vertovec, 2023). Students—including multilingual learners—have unique social, cultural, and educational characteristics that, instead of being discounted, might be leveraged in instruction and assessment as a means of advancing equity in education. To better assess and support the reading and literacy development of multilingual learners, we employed socioculturally responsive and personalized assessment approaches in developing a classroom assessment for formative use. In this webinar, we will demonstrate the features of our assessment design and share research findings from a usability study.
