The name of our newsletter refers to the Carnegie Mellon Campus fence , an unofficial billboard used by students to paint poignant messages, and advertise upcoming events or recent accomplishments.

The CMU Portugal Program welcomes 18 new Ph.D. students for the 2024/25 academic year, including 7 Dual Degree and 11 Affiliated Ph.D. students.
The?new Dual Degree students ?will participate in a full-time program, spending 2 years at CMU and 3 years at a Portuguese university. Candidates are?affiliated with four Portuguese higher education institutions and four CMU departments and will conduct their research in Computer Science, Languages Technologies, Engineering and Public Policy, and Software Engineering.
The?new Affiliated Ph.D. students ?will be hosted at six Portuguese universities and six CMU departments. Their research projects will be conducted closely with industry partners,?such as AMBISIG, Invisible Lab, PDMFC, Unbabel, and VMWare.
Jo?o Barros, former CMU Portugal national director (2009-2012), was appointed associate director of?Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa)
He will partner with the leadership team to advance the mission of CMU-Africa and oversee administrative functions, including business operations, enrollment management, and student affairs. In his role, he will focus on leading process improvement activities for the College of?Engineering’s Kigali, Rwanda location to create professional development opportunities and strengthen the university's research culture.
The CMU Portugal Academy officially launched its first edition with a bootcamp held on September 13th and 14th at the Interactive Technologies Institute (ITI) facilities at Beato Innovation District.
The event welcomed the 46 students enrolled in the three Academy’s Advanced Training Programs in digital technologies, who will experience cutting-edge education in AI, Data Science & Machine Learning; Product Management; and User Experience & Service Design.?During the two-day bootcamp, participants took part in hands-on case studies and collaborative group exercises, interacting with experts from both academia and industry.
On September 8th, CMU Portugal students participated in the CMU Day at PNC Park, a yearly event hosted by?the major league baseball team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. It is a great way to?kick off the academic year as the Program welcomes 12 students to spend the Fall semester at CMU:?5?Affiliated?PhDs?and 7 Dual Degree PhDs who will join the CMU Portugal community in Pittsburgh. Attending students were from the 4 CMU departments: Engineering and Public Policy (EPP), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), and Computer Science (CS).

The project’s main goal is to develop a new generation of battery-free medical microelectronic implants.
Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science recently launched a new podcast, 'Does Compute'. The third episode, titled “Data From Humans” features CMU Portugal affiliate Professor Mayank Goel. In this edition, alongside Traci Kennedy from the University of Pittsburgh, the discussion explores how computer science is transforming approaches to both mental and physical health.?Professor Goel currently advises one CMU Portugal Affiliated PhD student and serves as Project PI for the CMU Portugal Exploratory Research Project iNNOV Sensing.
CMU Portugal is?one of the academic institutions participating in the Bridge AI ?project, created to empower?policy-makers with the best insights for the effective implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Act, the first AI regulation, based on sound scientific knowledge, experts’ guidance, and concrete cases from the Center for Responsible AI .
The project's working groups will discuss insights at a workshop on October 17-18 and the conclusions will be presented at the Bridge AI Conference "Portugal at the Forefront of AI Regulation", a public event held on October 19th, at Champalimaud Foundation.?
