Is Bustle the Next Condé Nast? Business of Fashion
“One thing that may have set Goldberg and Bustle Digital Group apart is a rare sense of optimism — that women’s media isn’t on its last breath, that advertising is a good business model, that losing or gaining 5 million uniques here and there needn’t send executives into tizzies.”
Bustle has built a business that provides advertisers access to a powerful group of consumers, female millennials. Bustle Digital Group has created a network that currently contains five brands, Bustle, Romper, Elite Daily, Mic and The Zoe Report aimed at empowering female millennials. Bustle has not been afraid to create new ways for readers to consume its content whether that be through “digital issues” that essentially offers readers a mini-magazine instead of a never-ending feed of daily news. Bustle also pared one of these special editions, The Rule Breakers Edition with an event in which readers could pay for tickets to experience Monáe, participate in a “mass meditation,” roller skate, mix a custom face scrub by St Ives and apply temporary tattoos while waiting to use a photo booth. Bustle created another opportunity to generate revenue by offering brands and advertisers the opportunity to sponsor the mini-magazine and then also have them interact with Bustle readers who attended The Rule Breakers even in Brooklyn.
“In five years, Bustle Digital Group will be the largest publishing company in New York with the most journalists on staff doing the best work,” Bryan Goldberg said. “And how many brands are we going to have under our umbrella in five years? I don't know, 15, 16, 20?”
Full Disclosure: Little Red Book Now Unmasks KOLs’ Paid Posts Jing Daily
“Now on Little Red Book influencers and brands are also required to make this clear; otherwise, the post is removed (it’s undisclosed how exactly the platform detects illegal posts). Removing posts is a much lighter consequence, but a step in the right direction.”
Little Red Book or Red, has created another way in which brands that want to be on Red and working with key opinion leaders, need to create an official account if the brands want their ads to be seen on Red. Brands such as La Mer, YSL, Shiseido, MAC, and Fendi have recently launched official accounts and now collaborate with bloggers that launch their promotional content. By labeling sponsored posts as clearly as possible, Red can ensure the content ecosystem on its platform is truthful, creating the perception that the playing field is equal for all influencers.”
