Over the past week, two major Christian news sites have taken two opposing stances when it comes to President Trump. Their differences have caused some to speculate whether there's a growing rift within the President's evangelical base. Its also stirred fresh debate among evangelical Christians over whether believers should or should not support President Trump.
It started last Friday, when the retiring editor of "Christianity Today" stirred controversy after he published an op-ed calling for the president's removal from office over impeachment, calling Trump's actions "immoral". He challenged Christians to "consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior."
Then this week, "The Christian Post" came under fire when its political editor abruptly resigned saying an op-ed published Monday went too far, aligning the publication's editorial board with support for President Trump. The Post's article took an opposing view from Christianity Today's, saying Christianity's Today's op-ed "does not represent evangelical Christianity today, yesterday or in the future" while accusing its editor of having "elitist disdain and corrosive condescension".
The Post editor who resigned clarified today on CNN he'd been willing to publish the article as an opinion piece, "but when I was told that this would be the position of the paper, of the news site, I said that's not something I can support."
Opinions vary among evangelicals. Christianity Today says it has lost 2,000 subscriptions since the controversy over its editorial, but gained 5,000 others, according to Slate.com.
This week, another op-ed by The New Yorker, poses the question "What It Would Take for Evangelicals to Turn on President Trump" adding that "Christians concerned about Trumpism and worried about the future of their faith, however, may need to turn their focus inward."
