Six newcomers made their debut on the Forbes India Rich List 2019. Alkem Laboratories’ Singh family leads the pack, followed by ed-tech unicorn Byju’s founder Byju Raveendran. Haldiram Snacks’ Manohar Lal and Madhusudan Agarwal, and sanitaryware brand Jaquar’s Rajesh Mehra also made the cut. Appreciation for your work may seem incomplete if it’s not accompanied by a role elevation. But there are ways to broach the subject with your employer. Figuring out how indispensable you are is the first step, says Prabir Jha, founder of Prabir Jha People Advisory and former HR head of Cipla. Your boss will be reluctant to let go of you if you are a critical resource. Vehicle-rental marketplace RentOnGo has shut shop and its founder Nikhil Chhabra has blamed it on bike-sharing startup Bounce. Chhabra alleged that Bounce ghosted its smaller peer on an acquisition deal after signing the term sheet and conducting the due diligence last year. He said the mobility venture used “excuses” such as “will need more time” to “board isn’t approving…” and threatened cancelling the deal when RentOnGo cited the term sheet. Bounce co-founder Vivekanada Hallekere said RentOnGo shut the business prematurely, leaving little value for the acquirer in the deal, besides following questionable vehicle-licensing practices that were red flags. Similarly, Lifestyle and Future Group are matching the heavy discounts on e-tailers. The reasons? One, brands realise that disruptive pricing for just one channel affects overall sales. Two, no one wants to take any chances given the weak consumer sentiment. Join the conversation
When we’re passionate about making a persuasive case to others, many of us opt to pile on the supporting evidence. But when it comes to argumentation, less is often more, according to London Business School’s Niro Sivanathan. When we take an “everything but the kitchen sink” approach to persuasion, our argument often suffers from a “dilution effect”, where stronger evidence mixes with the weak, making everything seem average. To make your case, go for short and sweet. Join the conversation
Idea of the day: When we think of superpowers we desire, our minds gravitate to skills and abilities that are out of reach. But Wired magazine co-founder Kevin Kelly reminds us of one exceptional power that, for many of us, is readily within our grasp.
“Reading is a superpower that also gives you a type of teleportation; it moves you a million miles instantly. When you have this superpower you can see the world from the viewpoint of someone else. This helps protect you from the mistakes and untruths of others as well as your own ignorance.”
