New York's Charge to a Brighter Future: Transforming Energy and Economy
If there's one thing that's been impressed upon me during my time representing SineWatts at the recent NY BEST led Capture the Energy Event, it's that change isn't an overnight occurrence. It's a challenging, demanding, and yet an incredibly gratifying process. This sentiment was resonated by Rory Christian, CEM, CEA from the New York Public Service Commission as we gathered to discuss the integral role of energy storage in economic development.
This gathering was an affirmation of New York's commitment to a greener, brighter future, and at the heart of this commitment is the audacious Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. The Act ushers New York onto a path towards zero carbon emissions in the electricity sector by 2040, a target that is ambitious yet essential in a world grappling with a mounting climate crisis.
Listening to Doreen Harris from NYSERDA , I was imbued with a profound sense of optimism. "Benefits far exceed the cost," she confidently expressed, a sentiment I deeply agree with. We're not just talking about climate action here; this is about climate justice, and the establishment of a new, sustainable climate economy.
The event afforded us a crucial opportunity to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses. William Acker 's insights were particularly poignant in light of the tragic micromobility fires, underscoring the urgency for sustainable and reliable energy solutions. Bart Franey of National Grid emphasized the dire need to modernize our grid, constructed before the Great Depression and World War II, and the increasing necessity of long-duration energy storage.
A key player in this transformation is batteries and energy storage. Their potential impact spans all sectors, from EV charging to buildings, making them a lifeline to a sustainable future. Venkat Srinivasan from Argonne National Laboratory ' Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science voiced how New York and California are leading the way, inspiring the nation.

Permitting, however, poses a significant hurdle, as noted by Rory Christian, CEM, CEA . We need to make it reasonable, practical, and consistent. David Whipple from Empire State Development reminded us that now is the time to put our heads together and get to work. New York is rich with opportunities, teeming with sustainable resources like hydropower, wind, and solar energy.
Now, in a recent Guardian article, it was brought to light that the biggest challenge facing us is one that batteries can play a significant role in solving: grid instability. As more and more renewable energy sources are brought online, the question of how to store that energy when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing becomes more pressing.
It's not a challenge we're facing alone. Exciting legislative actions are taking place in California that could see electric vehicles becoming part of the solution, feeding power back into the grid during times of peak demand.
As I reflect on the ambitious goals set forth by New York—to install 9 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035, 10 gigawatts of solar by 2030, and 6 gigawatts of energy storage by 2030—I am reminded of the magnitude of the task at hand. But as Doreen Harris emphasized, "We are demonstrating it is possible and achievable to implement energy storage."
New York and California are showing remarkable leadership in this arena. They are demonstrating the potential of a future powered by sustainable, renewable energy—a future that strengthens our economy, elevates our quality of life, and ushers in a new era of energy independence.
Change is happening, and while it might not be overnight, it's unfolding before our eyes. And as we rise to meet these challenges collectively and through our work at SineWatts , I am filled with excitement and anticipation for the future we are building together.
