London-born brand The Hoxton made the journey across the pond last year with the opening of its first US outpost, The Hoxton, Williamsburg
After sitting empty for almost 20 years, the iconic TWA Flight Center terminal at JFK International – once the epicentre of the golden age of air travel – has been given a new lease of life, opening as the TWA Hotel. Taking guests on a journey back to the Swinging Sixties, the hotel has been decked out with mid-century modern furnishings, rotary phones and custom-built walnut and brass minibars. The Sunken Lounge sits at the heart of the hotel and stays true to the 1960s terminal with authentic white penny tiles and the original bright red carpet as well as a departure board displaying custom messages. Here guests can enjoy retro cocktails in front of floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the historic 'Connie' aeroplane, which now too houses its own cocktail bar. Further bars and restaurants include The Paris Café overseen by revered chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and The Pool Bar, which sits next to a rooftop infinity pool that offers panoramic views of the airport's busiest runways. The guest rooms also offer runway views (ultra-thick windows keep the noise out) and additional facilities include a fitness centre and meeting and event space.

Finding its home next to one of the world's most recognisable crossroads, the Times Square Edition is another new property opening in an iconic New York location. Sitting within a 42-storey tower overlooking the bright lights of the billboards, the hotel – part of a brand that's renowned for its chic minimalism – offers a stark juxtaposition to the flashy backdrop. The 452 guest rooms and suites are dressed in the brand's signature neutral tones and boast floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the neighbourhood, but as with all Edition properties, it’s the social spaces that steal the show. The signature restaurant, 701West, offers a fine dining experience against a sultry backdrop of wood panelling, electric blue velvet and white marble mosaic floors while The Terrace and Outdoor Gardens provide a more casual offering overlooking the bustling streets below.

Also opening in Midtown, Hotel Hendricks offers design-led accommodation between Fifth and Sixth Avenue. Created by New York architects Nobutaka Ashihara Architect PC and Beverly Hills-based designer Marcello Pozzi, the sleek 25-storey property has industrial elements softened by pastel accents, playful animal prints and mahogany furnishings. The rooftop features two bars – one for summer drinking and one for year-round cocktails – and the on-site restaurant, Paloma, serves plates inspired by Central and South America. Splashes of pastel can also be found at chic new hotel Mr. C Seaport. Located in one of New York's oldest neighbourhoods, the hotel is part of the Cipriani family – the group behind the legendary Harry’s in Venice and other destination restaurants across the globe – and continues their expansion into the world of boutique hotels. Guests are given a taste of Harry's on arrival with a classic bellini, which was created by Giuseppe Cipriani at the Venice restaurant back in 1948, and the hotel's in-house restaurant is also named after the fruity tipple. Here diners can tuck into rustic Italian fare in a smart yet pared-back setting of wood furnishings, white brick walls and appropriate pops of peach.
Artworks by Bard students and alumni and Period features make Freehand New York one of the city's most stylish properties
London-born brand The Hoxton made the journey across the pond last year with the opening of its first US outpost, The Hoxton, Williamsburg ----– the closest new hotel to the Brooklyn EXPO Center, where DMWF Expo North America is being held. Locally-sourced vintage furniture, contemporary art and Seventies-style lighting make up the interiors and the smartly-dressed bedrooms offer views of Brooklyn and Manhattan through floor-to-ceiling windows. Like all Hoxton properties, there's a large living room space that's perfect for both lounging and working while the main restaurant, Klein's, is overseen by the people behind popular Brooklyn venues Five Leaves and Union Pool. Freehand New York also puts a strong focus on its public spaces with several bars and restaurants and a communal living room. The main restaurant, Simon & The Whale, comes from Gabriel Stulman, who's behind West Village's Bar Sardine, and the rooftop bar, The Broken Shaker, is part of Gabriel Orta and Elad Zvi's award-winning cocktail collective. Dark turquoise walls, artworks by Bard students and alumni, and Period features make the design-led property one of the city's most stylish new offerings but stripped-back rooms and shared hostel-like dorms help keep the costs down.
Moxy NYC Chelsea has five stylish bars and restaurants and a co-working space
From the people behind Ace Hotels, Sister City is another new property offering affordable, design-focused accommodation. Taking a minimalistic approach, the hotel is inspired by Scandinavian style and Japanese functionality with stripped-back, image-conscious interiors free of flashy artworks and features. Italian marble floors, 1970s furniture and plenty of wood create a calm, sophisticated setting. The all-day restaurant and bar, Floret, is led by award-winning chef Joe Ogrodnek of acclaimed Brooklyn restaurant Battersby. Another brand that's known for its stripped-back accommodation, CitizenM expanded its New York presence last year with the opening of CitizenM New York Bowery. Like all CitizenM properties, this outlet has a strong focus on affordable luxury, replacing unnecessary fluff with features more in keeping with today's modern traveller – power showers, superfast WiFi and unlimited free movies being just three examples. Another brand staple is the large living room open to hotel guests and visitors alike. Filled with designer furnishings, artworks and an extensive collection of coffee table books, the stylish space is ideal for relaxing, working and socialising. The hotel is also home to The Museum of Street Art (MoSA), a stairwell exhibit created by 20 graffiti artists as a tribute to the demolished 5 Pointz street art display.

Also putting the focus on drinking, dining and socialising, Marriott's millennial-focused Moxy brand arrived in Chelsea earlier this year with the opening of Moxy NYC Chelsea. Billed as a 'micro room, macro-amenity hotel', the hotel offers small, utilitarian rooms with space-saving furniture and high-tech amenities alongside five beautiful bars and restaurants, a co-working space and a programme of activities such as rooftop fitness, floral workshops and pizza-making classes. Inspired by its Chelsea Flower District neighbourhood, the hotel has a botanical-inspired design and is entered through an overgrown flower shop. The brand is also gearing up to open Moxy East Village this September.

Another new Chelsea opening from Marriott, the Renaissance New York Chelsea Hotel is due to open in November. Like the Moxy, the property will pay homage to its Flower District neighbour as well as its former life as an Antiques Garage Flea Market. The rooftop swimming pool and bar will be nestled among greenery and flowers to create a garden-inspired setting and leaf patterns will be projected onto the walls. Vintage belts from the original flea market will feature in the lifts and chairs will be made out of leather luggage.
In New York's financial district, The Assemblage is a modern hotel and co-living space that puts wellness at the forefront. Entered through a hallway filled with moss, the property features 79 apartment-style rooms equipped with kitchens and living rooms in order to provide a home-away-from-home. Guests are invited to take part in daily yoga and meditation classes while further offerings include film screenings and live music performances. The hotel is an alcohol-free zone so the bar serves a menu of plant-based elixirs and the restaurant offers a line-up of healthy vegan options.

Luxury fitness brand Equinox has also combined wellness and hospitality with the opening of its first-ever hotel in New York's Hudson Yards. Aimed at travellers who struggle to combine their fitness routine with their travels, The Equinox Hotel promises 'the best of both worlds' with 212 bedrooms sitting alongside a 60,000-square-metre Equinox Fitness Club – the biggest one to date -– a state-of-the-art recovery-driven spa and an artisan-focused restaurant that offers spectacular 24th-floor city views. There's also a bar serving everything from superfood lattes to classic martinis. Hotel guests become members of the fitness club during their stay with access to personal training and fitness classes while the rooms and spa have been designed with regeneration in mind. The high-tech rooms have a precise temperature and customisable blackout shades to encourage a great night's sleep and the spa features salt water pools, infrared saunas and tailored treatments.
