The Department of State’s Office of Planning, Development, and Community Infrastructure (OPDCI) is now hiring Coastal Resources Specialists to expand its dedicated and dynamic team.?

Starting Salary: $60,069

https://statejobs.ny.gov/public/vacancyDetailsView.cfm?id=94154

Our people help to protect and restore the State’s natural and coastal resources, water quality, and the working waterfronts while protecting its natural resources for future generations.?We also conduct consistency review of federal activities proposed in the coastal area with the policies and purposes of the New York State Coastal Management Program, and provide technical assistance to other agencies, local governments, and other partners with respect to consistency review and applicable laws, regulations, and policies.

While the job title may sound technical, the day-to-day duties and activities include an over-arching human and community-based element that makes the job both a science and an art.?Coastal Resources Specialists worked with the city to Rochester to develop the ROC the Riverway initiative (https://www.cityofrochester.gov/roctheriverway/), rebuilt communities after Superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storms Irene and Lee by assisting with resiliency planning and evaluate how offshore wind projects interplay with state coastal policy. All this and more to protect the State’s natural and human resources and interests while addressing climate change.

This is a competitive position that can accept qualified applicants in two ways:

  1. Have taken the Professional Career Opportunity (PCO) examination administered by the NYS Department of Civil Service; and
  2. Have not yet taken the exam for this title and meet the educational and experiential background requirements (provisional appointment).?This includes: a Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainability Studies and two years of professional experience with responsibility for developing and implementing plans and projects that protect, restore and/or develop land, water and/or other resources in coastal areas or other waterfront locations.

The potential for provisional hires is rare, so I wanted to be sure you were aware of it.?
