New Year’s Resolutions, a.k.a. Why are you doing this to yourself?

New Year’s Resolutions, a.k.a. Why are you doing this to yourself?

When I typed "no New Year's resolution" into Google, there were a lot of articles and scientific resources proving why not making resolutions is a good idea. I knew it wasn't a good way to go, but still, I considered a gym membership. Why? I still don't know. I know that, to me, going to the gym in January is nothing but pure torture. I prefer to do my yoga set at home every now and then; I will go to the gym when I want to. So why do I want a "new" me for 2023?

Grab a coffee and see how this way of thinking might bring you nothing but frustration and lower your self-esteem. I know it doesn't sound very inviting, but here we have a safe space, so just relax and inhale the "I am not the only one who feels that way" vibes.?

The New Year feels like a new, cute, not worn-out pocket planner. You can't help but to carefully enter your first appointments and plans with your favorite pen. I am not 100% sure if that's always the case but just admit that you smiled. It's a small, silly, harmless thing until your pages for January are fully booked with brand-new activities and "challenges" you want to face. If you're aware of the fact that you tend to do this or have taken some actions to avoid it in the future, please see some rules below that might help you to pass through the New Year's resolutions phase. What helps, then? Mindful introspection and asking yourself the right questions. Here are some that might help you:

  • Why do I want to pick January to start something new? What is so unique and specific about this date?
  • If I started this project later, is it harder or easier for me to accomplish my goal??
  • How do I operate throughout the seasons? Do I feel depressed after Christmas? Do I already have long vacations booked? Am I more productive when the weather is nice, or do I focus better when it's dark and cold outside?
  • Are there any meetings, events, or book premieres that I am waiting for this year? Is there a chance that after new inspirations, I might change my initial plan??

These are four core questions that you might find interesting. Don't hesitate to discuss it with someone you trust, or leave it for yourself during a quiet moment alone. Every year brings something new, and it can be exciting, scary, or something else altogether. Let yourself be flexible and open to change. Trust yourself with your plans. You know when the best time to make changes is.?

Great article. I also think that making very strict resolutions can actually be counterproductive and frustrating. I prefer to think that 10 minutes yoga per week is better than no yoga at all! Especially when you are a working parent with very limited time for yourself ;)
