Standard Def, Hi Def, 1080p 4K, 8K and so it goes on. I’m talking about the resolution, people!
What does it mean and why is it important? Put simply, it’s all about the quality of the viewing experience and that comes from the number of pixels that make up a screen's display. 4K also known as UHD (Ultra-High Definition) typically has four times as many pixels than regular HDTV, which in turn has roughly four times the number of pixels as standard definition. It’s not a precise science and they are other variants but cast your mind back to when you first saw an HD picture as opposed to an SD one... it was quite something, wasn't it? And now 4K is becoming mainstream, the viewing experience of Planet Earth II is going to be even more epic!
The clarity that you get from a mobile phone retina display screen is also quite astonishing these days especially when viewing hi resolution content through a VR headset. As technology marches ever onwards, 8K will in time become the norm and truly immersive hyper-realistic visual experiences are on the near horizon.
It was great to be walking past Aviva’s offices in the City yesterday and seeing one of our case studies playing in all its glory on one of their gigantic UHD screens in reception. It’s a good job that we shoot everything in 4K these days!
