New Year, New You! (How's That Going?)
February is here! How are those New Year’s resolutions coming along? Was it a dry (or wet) January? Have you made it to the gym, reached a personal best on the Peloton, eaten right, or gotten a good night’s sleep? Most importantly, have you taken control of your career?
Every new year brings optimism for a fresh start. However, even with the best intentions, “life” can get in the way of your goals.
Controlling your own destiny is empowering – and daunting. Whether you're an associate on the partnership track or a partner looking for something more (or something better or something different), having a vision for your career is critical to your short- and long-term success. It’s not enough to be a great lawyer; you must actively participate in your career. You need foresight and business savvy – about your firm and your expertise. Think of yourself as a brand, not a commodity.

As you reflect on yourself, take in your surroundings. Know what is happening in the firm – the whole firm, not just your practice area. Ask questions – of yourself and others. Are you and your practice group part of the firm’s long-term strategic plan? Is the firm culture a good fit for your personality? How are the political winds of change impacting your practice area? Stay informed about the legal market. In sum: Be observant. Be engaged. Be prepared.

Fly the plan.” He ingrained in me – and countless others – that with thoughtful preparation, you can minimize risk and maximize success.
