New Year Traditions Around the World

In the first edition of this newsletter one year ago, we shared some of our favorite New Year traditions around the world.

Here are a few more!

Polar Plunge

Many people around the world celebrate the New Year by jumping into freezing cold (or frozen) lakes, rivers and swimming pools. Have you done it? Leave a comment (or photo!) and let us know.

New Year's Resolutions

The first people believed to have devised and followed New Year's Resolutions were the Babylonians, who lived in present-day Iraq. The Romans adopted the practice of making New Year's resolutions, which survives today.

Did the Babylonians and ancient Romans stick with their resolutions longer than we do, I wonder?

New Year Foods

Traditional foods eaten in celebration of the new year are black-eyed peas (popular in recipes like Hoppin' John, believed to originate in the South Carolina Low Country from African roots); and romazava, the national dish of Madagascar, made with zebu meat, tomatoes, onions and greens and accompanied by rice.

In Pennsylvania, pork and sauerkraut are popular on New Year menus - reportedly because pigs root forward (unlike chickens who move backwards as they scratch).

Sauerkraut symbolizes longevity. Who couldn't use more of that?

Letters from Children to their Families

Flemish children in Belgian write letters with their new year's wishes for their parents, godparents and grandparents. That's a nice tradition to share!

How are you ringing in 2024?

How will you commemorate and celebrate the start of 2024?

Leave a comment and tell us!

For now, I think it's going to be one day at a time for me... Still tasting the after effects of a very hectic 2023, I don't want to overwhelm myself just quite yet??????

"Woven through time, a golden thread untold, An anomaly of anomalies, radiant and bold, "I am no thing and everything," echoes the cry, Where and everywhere, I/We are one with the sky. In the cosmic tapestry, we are cosmic weavers, Threads of existence, intertwining achievers, Each strand a story, in the grand design unfold, Interconnected spirits, in the vastness, behold. Surfing the razor's edge, where time jumpers unite, Stringing pearls of visionaries, in the tapestry of light, Radiant threads of consciousness, converge in harmony, Diverse perspectives blend, in an empowering symphony. Sailing on waves of time, sharing ethereal space, Emerald dreams and sapphire hopes interlace, In the kaleidoscope of thoughts, we find our unity, A symphony of souls, entwined in cosmic ingenuity. From ancient echoes to futures yet unspun, The storyteller's legacy, the journey begun, In every verse, every thought, and timeless lore, Embracing multiplicity, we weave with hearts galore. A labyrinth of history, a maelstrom of fate, Guided by ancient whispers, we navigate, Through the labyrinth of stories, entwined by line and rhyme, In a timeless dance, through the corridors of time. So let the diamonds shine in the boundless night, MWM
