New Year Resolutions

Research has shown that about half of all adults make New Year’s resolutions. However, fewer than 10% manage to keep them for more than a few months.
Half the adult population is a lot of people placing repeated hope for a positive change with a very low success rate. These are made at a time of celebration and reflection with good intention but minimal execution.
The most common resolutions are: losing weight, doing more exercise, quitting smoking, saving money and kick starting a career change.
Breaking habits such as lifestyle choices are not easy and need more attention. Also individuals set themselves up for failure with unrealistic goals plus may even be a victim of "false hope syndrome”.
However the intention and the desire for change is there. Therefore a "change" to how you set your New Year Resolution could be the answer.
Using the example of a Career change or Kickstarting your desired career please see our suggestions to beat this New year trap and actually make it happen:
1) Don’t wait for New Year
If the failure is associated with "New Year", why keep attaching your desired change till then? Also if you think about this example if you are preparing your new CV and approach to employers to be done at the same time as half the adult population you are simply making it far to competitive for yourself. Now is the time to be a step ahead. Think about it; all gym’s market for the New Year as there is a spike in memberships sold. By February they are empty again. Why put your career in the spike of applications?
2) Be realistic.
You need to begin by making resolutions that you can keep and that are practical. If you want to reduce your alcohol intake because you tend to drink alcohol every day, don’t immediately go teetotal. Try to cut out alcohol every other day or have a drink once every three days. Also, breaking up the longer-term goal into more manageable short-term goals can be beneficial and more rewarding. 3) Tell someone your resolution.
Letting family and friends know that you have a New Year’s resolution that you really want to keep will act as both a safety barrier and a face-saver. Work with a recruiter or Career Coach who will be there for you when you need and hold you accountable for your gaols. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and support from those around you.
4) Don’t Limit Yourself.
Changing your behaviour, or some aspect of it, doesn’t have to be restricted to the start of the New Year. It can be anytime.
With your career its easy to become despondent after rejection. Especially if your habit is to apply when everyone else is. Use a career coach and work with them to give yourself the job-stretch your seeking. Being strategic and having a professional on your side maybe all you need to refresh your limits.
5) Do one thing at a time.
One of the easiest routes to failure is to have too many resolutions. If you want to be fitter and healthier, do just one thing at a time. Give up drinking. Give up smoking. Join a gym. Eat more healthily. But don’t do them all at once, just choose one and do your best to stick to it. Once you have got one thing under your control, you can begin a second resolution.

4 年Great article, Tom. I liked your advice to change one habit at a time. The easier we make it to acquire beneficial new habits, the more likely we are to do so.
