New Year Resolution for Better Thinking, Conversations and Mental Health

Making resolutions is one of the most popular New Year's traditions, but year after year people refuse to follow through on these good intentions. In fact, research shows that only 9% of Americans who make resolutions actually follow through on them. If the struggle sounds all too familiar, remember that it's never too late to turn over a new leaf, and the new year and day of 2024 is as good a time as any.

Check out the list below of New Year's resolution ideas to inspire you to make the most of the year ahead. Whether you want to work on your physical or mental health, improve your financial well-being, or create more meaningful relationships, these New Year's resolutions are worth making.

In addition, these are practical and achievable goals that will allow you to slowly but surely change your life. Skip common decisions like going to the gym and consider more outside-the-box ideas like investing money, donating to charity, or trying a new hobby. No matter which path you choose, there are many ways to create a happier and healthier life in the new year. The only question is, how do you choose just one?

A great way to improve yourself is to develop your conversational skills, especially when it comes to civil debate.

In 2024, here are eight ways to better engage people in civic debate:

  1. Try to reach an agreement and understand each other instead of winning the argument.
  2. Clarify with others to make sure I really understand their thoughts and perspective.
  3. Try to avoid logical fallacies to support my arguments.
  4. Try to explain my own biases and distortions, and try to be intellectually humble.
  5. Try to be reasonable, rational and develop coherent cogent arguments.
  6. Avoid personal attacks, sarcasm and profanity. Don't resort to mean-spiritedness.
  7. Use the "Principle of Charity" to give people the benefit of the doubt, and see the merits of other perspectives in the best light.
  8. Be really open to changing your mind if given convincing arguments or evidence that goes against my beliefs.

What are you willing to commit to make this year so that you can make it the best year yet? How can you improve yourself with civil conversation skills specifically using these rules?

I sincerely appreciate your interest and support. Our mission is to always provide great content in helping you learn more about critical thinking, communication, speaking, presentation and learning skills.
