New Year, Renewed Purpose: Intentional Steps Forward
John Harrington
CEO @ Funds For Learning | Empowering Transformational Growth for a Brighter Future
The start of a new year invites us to pause and ask:?Where are we headed, and what impact do we want to make??At Funds For Learning, these questions are part of our DNA. Years ago, as our team grew, we introduced?GuideMarks—a set of principles like reliability, professionalism, and servant leadership. What started as a simple practice has become something much more: a shared commitment to intentional growth.?
For me,?GuideMarks?serve as a powerful reminder—lasting growth isn’t accidental. It’s the result of small, intentional steps, taken consistently over time.?
Reflect on Purpose Before Setting Goals?
In a fast-moving world, it’s easy to chase quick wins. But the most meaningful progress happens when we slow down and reconnect with purpose. At Funds For Learning, we center everything we do on the “why”: helping schools and libraries secure the E-rate funding they need to connect students and communities to critical resources.?
That purpose guides our goals, keeps us grounded, and ensures our actions serve others. As you plan for 2025, ask yourself:?What truly matters? What impact will our work have on those we serve??
Small, Intentional Steps Lead to Big Impact?

True growth rarely happens in giant leaps. It's built on small, deliberate actions—listening closely to a colleague, solving a tough problem, or showing up with steady professionalism. These steps may seem small in the moment, but over time, they build trust, create impact, and lead to lasting progress.?
Let me share a personal example. Last summer, I made a simple decision: to eat vegetables for lunch whenever possible. It wasn't a dramatic lifestyle overhaul—just one small, intentional choice. The results have surprised me. Beyond the expected health benefits, I've discovered increased afternoon energy, genuine enjoyment in the routine, and an unexpected boost to my overall mindset. This simple discipline has created ripple effects far beyond its original purpose.?
This lesson applies to both leadership and teamwork. Every intentional action we take contributes to something greater, whether it's empowering a client to achieve their goals or supporting a team member's growth. It's these steady, purposeful steps that drive shared success.?
The Bottom Line?
As we begin this new year, I challenge myself—and all of us—to approach 2025 with clarity and intention. Take time to reflect, align your actions with your purpose, and commit to the small steps that matter most.?
My hope is that this year, we all look back and see not just progress, but purpose realized. What intentional steps are you taking this year? I’d love to hear how you’re aligning your goals with purpose in 2025.??
