New Year, New...Pressure? Let’s Not Go There

Ah, January. The month where we’re bombarded with calls to “be a better you,” as if the current version isn’t grand enough. Sure, the start of a new year might feel like the perfect time to reinvent yourself, but let’s take a step back, shall we? It’s just another month, after all. And who says you need to hit the ground running at a hundred miles an hour? Slow and steady often wins the race, remember.
I was once told by a very wise person that if you practice something consistently for three months, whether it’s eating better, sleeping earlier, exercising, or improving your communication, it’s more likely to stick. Three months, not three days or three weeks! So let’s ease into 2025, shall we? There’s no medal for burning yourself out before February.
The past few years have been tough for many of us. Redundancies, job losses, and a job market that’s been more heartless than helpful have taken their toll. Ghosting and non-replies seem to have become the norm, leaving many feeling like they’re shouting into the void. Let me say this loud and clear: it’s not you that needs to change, it’s the system.

If you’re feeling like you’re treading water and getting nowhere, remember you’re not alone. Lean on your network. Ask for advice and introductions. Connect with people in your industry who can offer guidance or even just a bit of encouragement. And don’t be afraid to showcase your unique talents and experiences. Build your brand. Be bold. And if life has knocked the wind out of your sails, well, maybe it’s time to invest in a new engine.
So here’s my advice for the new year: be kind to yourself. Take your time. You don’t need to turn into a shiny, new version of you overnight, or even at all. Sometimes, staying true to who you are is the best thing you can do. And when all else fails, remember this bit of wisdom: life’s too short to skip dessert.
Here’s to 2025, let’s take it one day at a time. Sláinte!
