New Year. New Job? Remitly security roles!

This is always a fun this time of year as Twitter comes alive with new year’s resolutions and retrospectives on last year’s (or decade’s!) accomplishments. In the spirit of new beginnings, I humbly submit to you two roles for security at Remitly! We have both a Security Engineering Manager role and a Sr Security Engineer role. When I moved from Netflix to Remitly I was hoping for expanded scope, a strong values-focused culture, and a mission to be passionate about. While admittedly still in the ‘honeymoon’ period, I can say I am happy on all counts. If that sounds compelling you should check out these roles.

At Remitly’s scale you will take on a broader set of responsibilities than you would in a larger organization. Whereas I led Detection and Response at Netflix, at Remitly I have all of security, as well as IT and Infrastructure within my teams. As a leader on the security team here you will have an opportunity to weave together capabilities from protection, detection, and response. You will work across corporate IT systems, production infrastructure, and customer facing aspects of the product security experience. We have a great opportunity to make security a visible part of our value proposition to customers, and to make our customers feel at ease when sharing their personal information with us and sending their hard earned funds to loved ones in need. I am excited to build a security program with you that we can explain in quantified risk terms to our business partners, including our executive board.

Over the holiday break I had a chance to read Enlightened Capitalists, a survey of leaders from the 1700’s to present who pushed for social reforms through business practices. One of the things this book brought into focus was the central role of values in driving success at these companies - both economic and social. One could be forgiven for being jaded about corporate values. Too often the realities of an organization have little in common with the values it espouses. Only through hard work and constant attention can an organization approach the evolving goal of cultural consistency. Remitly’s leadership cares deeply about this, and invests accordingly. In my short time here I have had a number of hallway conversations and meetings with the CEO and other C-level folks on topics of culture. They are engaged, and this is a level of access I didn’t enjoy at my larger employers. As a leader here you would have a key role in sustaining and defining the culture.

A values-focused approach to building a company sets you up for great execution. It is also nice to have a goal to execute against that is inspiring and represents an opportunity to help millions of people around the world. Remitly’s goal is to transform the lives of immigrants and their families by providing the most trusted financial service products on the planet. Immigrants are a hardworking population underserved by traditional banking institutions. The economic power of remittances, money immigrant workers send back to support their loved ones, represents a $689B flow of capital, of which $529B went to developing countries in 2018 according to the UN. Global foreign aid, or “Official Development Assistance (ODA)” as defined by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), was $145B in 2017. If we can make remittances slightly more affordable, we have a huge lever on improving lives around the world; as well as a large addressable market with good unit economics.

So, that, at a high-level, is why I think these roles are exciting. If you would like to learn more about either role, how we would partner, the company, or anything else, please reach out, and Happy New Year!
