New Year New Job…. but don’t rush it!
Well, you have all spent time with the family, eaten too much and enjoyed your holidays and the inevitable new year’s resolutions have been made. Typically, apart from getting fit, losing weight, and learning something new, there is always find a new job!
So, you are mentally ready and probably given yourself the month of January to find yourself the perfect job. I don’t want to disappoint you but that is unlikely to happen!
So, what is the best approach…. Plan, research and use the next couple of months to identify what you really want.?I see this when people suddenly decide to start running, they go out and buy all the gear and run like mad for a week, get injured or just lose enthusiasm! Take your time.
The best steps
· Be clear why you want to move (future employers are going to ask this!)
· Figure out what you want to do, be realistic about this. Moving from a Marketing Manager’s role to an HR Manager’s role may prove quite difficult.

· Build a list of clients you ideally want to work for, again make this realistic and relevant. Moving within your own industry is a lot easier than going completely off piste to a completely new industry.
· Start connecting with those companies on Linkedin, target the line managers and start building a conversation with them. Remember they may not be actively looking, but you want to be the person they call when they are.
·?Start applying to adverts that interest you. A key fact, approx. 80% of people never get a reply when applying to LinkedIn job ads, the reason - they are not relevant for the job and clients and recruiters may find it difficult to find your cv in all the ones that are not relevant.
· Build a relationship with a recruiter. They are an invaluable source of information and once you have built a good relationship then they will always come to you if a role comes up.
·?Most all, take your time and really think about your next move. The first role you get offered may not be right. If you get one then seek advice off colleagues, friends, and your recruiter (they are often keen to help out and give you the best advice).
Best of luck in your search and just take your time over your search. It may take some time but the perfect job is out there!

1 年Much insight here. I think the part about the 80% of applicants never receiving a response is particularly important to share and I know how truly frustrating this is having been both an applicant and a recruiter. When posting an advert clearly defining requirements, skills & qualifications and receiving thousands of applicants but less than 5% are a fit for the requirements there is just no way of you responding to every applicant. As a talent acquisition manager, I try to close ads after a few days to limit this and use the auto-responses available either on the job boards or ATS but the sheer volume of irrelevant applicants to every advert sometimes makes this an impossible task. I think for applicants, it is helpful to know this statistic as it is frustrating when you are looking for a new role and submitting applications to a deafly silence. Many will not realise the volume of responses recruiters are receiving and actually by applying to every advert whether you have relevant skills required or not you are exacerbating this issue. Don't doubt yourself or your abilities at the lack of response but take the time to read adverts and apply to only relevant roles with a CV that clearly outlines the required skillsets.

1 年I agree with you as everyone is in rush to find resources and opportunities. It is true that being fast gets you achieve goals but being in rush is harmful. The thing that i learned is being in rush makes you miss most of the key factors of an opportunity.
