New Year Goals: How to Set Realistic and Achievable Milestones

New Year Goals: How to Set Realistic and Achievable Milestones

This year, many have shifted how they approach their goals. The years preceding, it was always focused on a vanity metric. But now, as we all face a threat to our health, people are putting their wellness at the top of the goal list for 2022.?Here are my top tips for setting health goals you can reach in 2022.

Benchmarks Matter?

Why do baselines matter? People who first write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them. Those that have data to measure this goal and progress against, take that likelihood even further.?

Having scanned over a million bodies in 2021 with our body scanning technology, Evolt 360, showed our innate desire to know where we start and where we finish.?

Our technology is helping people from all walks of life track changes across exercise, training, and nutrition. We are proud to be driving a movement towards a greater understanding of how our bodies are performing from the inside out.

This data is not only personal but powerful. It allows individuals to set targets based on accurate data, and hold themselves accountable through true outcomes.?

Using data for a competitive edge shouldn’t be reserved for your business projects. We should be applying these strategies to our health and goals. A study conducted by PwC of over 1,000 senior executives found that highly data-driven organisations are three times more likely to report significant improvements in decision-making than those who rely less on data. So what happens when we use this approach to data and benchmarks in our personal life?

When you create a strategy using your own body’s data, your potential to succeed jumps, discover your benchmarks and start your journey on treating your personal goals like you would a corporate project.?

Get Real About What’s Wrong

The Statistic Brain Research Company found 42% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, but only 9.2% actually fulfilled them. We can all make assumptions as to why this is. They were possibly too ambitious, lacked direction, or did not create a strategy that addressed why they had not been able to meet this goal previously, aka ‘what’s wrong’ with their behaviour.?

The concept of treating your health and wellness like a corporate project brings us to a critical indifference we currently apply to the two. If something is wrong in a working business project, we stop and address it.?

This may look like addressing the roadblocks, creating strategies to minimise them or turning a whole 180 down a different path. Whatever we need to do as individuals and a team to get us to our project deadline.?

However, when it comes to our personal goals, we tend to put our heads in the sand about what is going wrong with our progress.?

Put your ego aside and truly step back to review what is causing you to be slowed down when it comes to reaching your goals.?

If you can’t get real about what’s wrong, you will never be able to get it right.?

Set Quarter Goals

Having the benchmarks to measure your success against leads to creating quantifiable goals at interval stages. They say you eat an elephant one bite at a time, and that is exactly how you reach personal health and fitness goals.?

Create an overall annual goal; this is your ‘big sky’ goal, which could be running a marathon, losing 15kg or increasing muscle mass by 10%. Then create quarter goals (you can see we are continuing the same tactics applied to professional projects) that outline what progress you want to make along the way.?

Doing this will allow you to plan out the habits you need to create to get you there. Such as creating x-many home-cooked meals over ordering takeaway, incorporating so many strength days into your routine or starting to run once per week. Doing this makes your big goal easier to achieve, and you have accountability to stay on track.?

Your goals for this year are nothing withing data, planning and clear targets to reach throughout the year. Equipping yourself with the same information and strategic plan you would if it was a business project is the same attitude you need when applying goals to your personal life. Don’t give yourself a second-best approach; get started on your way to resolution success by understanding your baseline and setting clear benchmarks.?

In both business and our personal lives, the phrase "set targets based on accurate data, and hold themselves accountable through true outcomes" is hugely successful and actioning this really helps to achieve realist goals- thanks Ed Zouroudis

Thanks for the great post Ed. "If something is wrong in a working business project, we stop and address it....However, when it comes to our personal goals, we tend to put our heads in the sand about what is going wrong with our progress" - incredible how many people (I am guilty as well) do this.
