Welcome to 2024!
The new year is the perfect opportunity to outline the goals we aspire to achieve over the next twelve months.
Sometimes, we find ourselves carrying forward unfinished goals from the previous year or aspirations that have lingered for years, waiting for the right moment to prioritize them.
Can you feel the anticipation of setting new goals at the beginning of the year?
It's like the energy of the New Year that opens doors to endless possibilities, akin to the symbolic drop of the ball in New York Times Square, resetting the clock at midnight.
Whether your objective is securing a new job, enrolling in university, launching a fresh career path, fostering relationships, shedding extra pounds, or evolving into a better version of yourself — as a professional, leader, or parent — I commend you for taking that initial step towards crafting a life you love.
Yet, the initial surge of New Year's energy can wane, and often, we lose interest or set our goals aside within the first few weeks for various reasons.
The journey may seem challenging, motivation might dwindle, or life's demands could take precedence, leaving us feeling unsupported.
Admittedly, I used to resist the idea of setting personal goals formally.
They felt like burdens, chores that lacked enjoyment or seemed insurmountable.
The intentions were there, but the follow-through was a challenge.
I would often justify my inaction by dismissing goals as mere statements on paper designed to induce self-criticism if left unfulfilled.
Sound familiar?
A turning point occurred a few years back when I started keeping a journal.
Through this internal transformation, I not only recorded my thoughts, feelings, and events but also committed to setting goals for the new year.
I decided to reinvent myself and my life, starting with small, manageable goals that had a bit of stretch, enough to push me out of my comfort zone without overwhelming me.
Breaking down each goal into small, impactful steps removed the fear of failure and provided clarity, ownership, accomplishment, and, most importantly, a sense of enjoyment.
If you're ready to embrace something new this year, consider creating a few goals for yourself.
Inject playfulness into the goal-setting process and maintain that spirit as you work towards achieving them by year-end.
Remember, goals need not be serious or audacious.
You're not in a competition; there's no award for the most goals achieved.
Design your goals for your own well-being, health, and love for yourself and your life.
I'm curious—what goals will you set this year?
How will you approach the journey with a balance of playfulness and challenge?
Who will be your supporter, your cheerleader when the going gets tough?
Let's make 2024 a year of growth, resilience, and accomplishment!
