Welcome to the New Year edition of The Agent Playbook!
As we dive into the dynamic world of real estate in the city that never sleeps, one crucial decision often comes to the forefront for aspiring agents and homebuyers alike: whether to align with a large real estate firm or opt for a boutique brokerage. In this edition, we'll explore the pros and cons of both options, helping you make an informed decision that aligns with your New Year’s goals.
The Power of Giants: Large Real Estate Firms
Pros:
Cons:
The Charm of Boutiques: Boutique Brokerages
Pros:
Cons:
The choice between a large firm and a boutique brokerage is a nuanced decision influenced by individual preferences, career goals, and the desired work environment. Both options have their unique advantages and challenges, and the key is to align your choice with your personal and professional aspirations.
One observation that I have seen is that newer agents who join either a boutique firm or a smaller team at a larger firm statistically have the strongest chance of succeeding. New agents who join a big firm without a pre-established book of business sometimes tend to get lost or forgotten. When you are part of a team of 50-100 agents with more management support, it’s harder for you to get lost in the mix, therefore, when your hard work is noticed, you have a better chance of gaining opportunities that might not be available at a larger firm. However, established agents who have grown their own book of business can do better at a larger firm where the name and recognition behind them can help propel the next level of their careers.
It is important to remember that every agent and every brokerage is different. Some of the most successful agents in NYC belong to boutique firms, and there are newer agents with no experience or connections who excel at larger brokerages. Different people thrive in different settings. Find out what works best for you - and always remember that you are an independent contractor! If you choose a brokerage and feel it might not be the right fit, you can always make a change. Also, you should always be growing in your career, so if things are feeling stale, perhaps it’s time to try something new. A change might be nerve-wracking and scary, but it also might be just the thing you need.

Exploring the Winter Wonders of NYC:
January Edition
As we step into the crisp embrace of January in the Big Apple, the city transforms into a winter wonderland with a myriad of activities to keep you enchanted. Here's your guide to making the most of NYC in January
1. Ice Skating:
Lace up your skates and glide across iconic rinks like The Rink at Rockefeller Center,? Wollman Rink in Central Park. For those who reside in Brooklyn, check out Lefrak Center in Prospect Park, where you can find me two nights a week playing in the NYC Women’s Hockey League and Hard Pass League , along with coaching the New York North Stars on Saturday mornings. Lefrak also has a Curling Club that has an intro course coming up soon for those who prefer to wear shoes on the ice.?
2. Museum Days:
Escape the cold by immersing yourself in the cultural warmth of NYC's renowned museums. Many institutions offer special winter exhibitions, so look into their websites for details. Check out The Met, MoMA, or the American Museum of Natural History for a dose of art, history, and science.
3. Restaurant Week:
My personal favorite time of the year! Indulge your taste buds during NYC Restaurant Week. Savor diverse cuisines at discounted prices, allowing you to explore the city's culinary scene without breaking the bank. There are 490 participating restaurants this January with 2-course lunch or 3-course dinner options with prices at $30 for Lunch and $45 Dinner!
4. Broadway Shows:
Warm up with the hottest Broadway shows this season. January offers an excellent time to snag tickets to popular productions without the summer crowds. Whether it's a classic musical or a gripping drama, Broadway has something for everyone.
5. Cozy Cafés and Bookstores:
Embrace the winter chill with a good book in one of NYC's cozy cafés. From the historic Strand Bookstore to quaint neighborhood coffee shops, find solace in the company of literature and a warm beverage. I just started down the rabbit hole known as “My Name Is Barbra” (I went the audiobook route), which is 48 hours (or 970 pages) and will take up a good portion of my month of January when I’m not working. My husband and I also went on a hunt for the best hot chocolate in December, which I highly recommend because we had an entire month filled with chocolatey, sugar-loaded excursions topped with homemade roasted marshmallows and pure bliss. - Shoutout to Fan Fan donuts in Bed-Stuy for my personal favorite so far this season.?
Side note: I still have many to check out, so please send me your personal favorite hot chocolate spots as I can continue into January.?
January in NYC is a tapestry of cultural events, winter sports, and culinary delights. Embrace the season's charm and create unforgettable memories against the backdrop of the city that never sleeps.
