New Year, New Career

It was not long ago that we said goodbye to 2018 and hello to 2019. The new year represents a fresh start; a chance to hit the reset button on your life. For many, their attention turns to their career. One of the more common New Year’s resolutions, according to a survey from Offers.com, is to get a new job or change careers. If that’s your goal for 2019, that’s great! In order to achieve it though, you’ll need a game plan. Here are three tips to maximize your chances of landing that new job this year.

1)Build your career community.

Networking can be a dirty word to some people, but it shouldn’t be. It often conjures up images of crowded banquet halls, with people racing to collect as many business cards as possible.

The reality though, is the best networkers focus on quality over quantity. It’s about finding people with whom you have some common ground and offering the other party value before asking for it in return. Take this approach, and not only will you have more networking success, but you’ll also be more comfortable doing it.

Networking doesn’t have to take place physically, either. Consider non-traditional channels like social media. With over 500 million members today, LinkedIn is the single greatest professional networking opportunity online. You can connect with people who share the same interests as you, the same company, even the same school. Finding common ground has never been easier.

2)Join professional organizations.

Speaking of common ground, professional organizations can be a great place to connect with like-minded individuals who share some aspect of your career journey. If you’re a marketer in the United States, consider joining the American Marketing Association. If you’re in Human Resources, consider the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA).

Whatever your employment background, there’s likely a professional organization that will help you connect with others and grow your network.

3)Get your resume recruiter ready.

Take a look at some of the most popular resume formats; if yours looks like it’s fresh out of the ’80s, it’s time for a facelift. This post from Jobscan has some great thought-starters.

Once you’ve got the layout down, it’s time to refresh the content. Make sure your resume speaks to your accomplishments: things you’ve done and results you’ve driven, not your responsibilities. You’re not trying to replicate your job description here.

When writing your accomplishments, start each bullet with an action verb. Words like “launched,” “delivered” and “created” all immediately speak to what you did in that situation, and help you put your best foot forward.

With these tips in hand, you’re ready to start taking the first steps toward changing your career situation for the better. Here’s to a successful 2019!
