A New Year, A New Book: 5 New Year Intentions for Writers and Aspiring Authors

What resolutions are authors and writers creating to get their book written and launched in 2024? Is this THE year you get your book written and/or launched? This article shares 5 intentions to help you write, publish, launch and sell your book in 2024.

Before we dive into the tips, let’s look at why resolutions and intentions fail and what you can do about it. CTV News shared a survey done by Time2Play. The Canadian survey shared some important information for authors about their New Year Resolutions or Intentions (you pick what language works best for you). It said that “48.1 per cent of respondents marked a lack of motivation as the reason, while 14.9 per cent forget about their resolutions. Losing track of their progress on their resolutions throughout the year was the reason for 12.2 per cent of the respondents.” Other challenges included not setting time aside to work the intention, or setting unrealistic goals. Commitment to intentions started to diminish after bout 4 ? months and on average, people spent $252.12 on failed resolutions per year.

Let’s change that!

Let 2024 be THE YEAR for you (wherever you are on your book journey):

-????????? To get you book started (stepping into regular writing)

-????????? To get your book edited

-????????? To create a profitable crowdfunding campaign

-????????? To publish your book

-????????? To launch your book

-????????? To build a community of raving fans

-????????? To generate revenue (lots) from your book

-????????? To bring your book to best seller status

-????????? To win awards for your book

-????????? To have your book featured on media, podcast, blogs and more

-????????? To have bookstores and libraries carrying your book

-????????? To be booked at events to speak about your book and expertise

-????????? To be invited to book clubs to answer questions about your book

-????????? To have LOADS of great reviews

-????????? To be selling books in bulk

-????????? To launch a profitable book and media tour

-????????? And what else?

?

1.?????? Set Goals for Writing and Publishing- this includes setting goals around getting your book done, launching it, your crowdfunding campaign objectives, how many books you want to sell and more. When you write it down it increases the degree of commitment and success.

?

2.?????? Find and Build Your Audience- really give thought to who your reading audience is, what’s important to them, how you will connect with them. Join groups on social media where your reading audience “hangs out.” Develop lead magnets to build your database with the perfect fit readers. Consider a crowdfunding campaign to help you raise a crowd and tap into other people’s audiences.

?

3.?????? Develop a Book Marketing Plan and Timeline- marketing and selling books is easier and more profitable when you have a plan and timeline. Create a marketing plan and take daily (15 to 30 mins) per day to “work the plan” and do a marketing activity. This could include calling a bookstore to get your book on their shelves, asking 3 people for reviews (reviews help sell books), booking a book club presentation, writing a press release, etc.

?

4.?????? Build relationships with Your Local Bookstores and Libraries – if getting into libraries and bookstores is part of your marketing plan, a great first step is to create a chart of all stories, libraries and contact information so you can reach out to a couple a day. Learn about their process to have them carry your book. Also explore what type of author events they host (maybe there is one you would LOVE to do!)

?5.?????? Map out your crowdfunding campaign – this can help you generate funds to cover the costs of editing, publishing, marketing, book tours, getting your book in other formats (e.g. audio) or different languages, and so much more.
