A new world
The agricultural revolution began in about 10,000 BC, wild grains were cultivated which led hunter-gatherers to become farmers who also started domesticating pigs, sheep, and cattle. Around this time the idea of individual ownership was loose because life was simply about survival, but with farming came the idea of land ownership and eventually country and state borders. One could argue this was the birth of consumerism. We now live in a fractured world with tensions, disputes and wars often as a result of land and power, yet we spend most of our days in front of screens communicating with people and consuming content from across the globe. The digital world is largely free of borders and I would say everyone has the potential for more equality than in the real world. Under a pseudonym, we can be whomever we want to be, for good and unfortunately for bad. Typically we spend 45 hours per week in front of a phone, computer or TV screen according to Ofcom in the UK, a number that's expected to increase. Today many of us may have "best friends" whom we've never met thanks to our online communities. The idea of being close to someone no longer has anything to do with spatial proximity, in fact, we may not even speak the same language yet we're able to connect, communicate, share and enjoy each other existence, especially in video games.
The agricultural revolution introduced many developments that we still live by today despite the changes in our lifestyles such as the need to eat at set times, this was designed to work around the need to work in the fields and farms. Why do we still follow a three-meal formula today when we dont farm? Many of us eat because it's just what we've been told to do, not because we're hungry. If we were taught and understood the very basic needs of our bodies better, would we have the same level of disease, obesity and famine in the world? The messages around food are the most confusing led by clever marketing and capitalism, celebrity endorsements, and inconclusive science.
Formal schooling was introduced to pass on practical knowledge and life skills but the education system evolved to work around a system that to this day still promotes information retention in our minds, this is outdated as a result of the internet and artificial intelligence. Marriage was born out of the need to procreate and pass on what was considered to be owned by men. Women were considered to be the property of men and even sold like animals! Thankfully, we've generally come to our senses on this one now and we marry for love and treat women with respect.
Today we're living through something just as seismic as the agricultural revolution with AI. One of the most important developments is DAO's (decentralised autonomous organisations) powered by code, according to a set framework of rules that can be dynamic. In order to learn more about this, Elluminate's virtual city will test many theories over the next few years, from consumerism in the virtual world to governance using a DAO framework and ownership of digital spaces and assets.
We’re looking to engage with smart brands, companies and organisations that maybe exploring the idea of decentralisation and user-produced brand content. If you’re one of them, reach out to learn more about Web 3, how to access tomorrow’s consumers and what you need to do to stay relevant.
Keep a lookout for our new virtual city in the cloud launching soon.
