I have been hearing the term "quiet quitting" over the last several weeks and pretty sure you all have been too. The term is becoming the new workplace buzzword, mostly among remote Gen Z and younger millennials, which does not mean that you are outright quitting your job but instead you are quitting the idea of going above and beyond. For some, it is physically checking out from work. For others, it is about not accepting additional work without additional pay.
Rather than working late on a Friday evening, organizing the annual team-building trip or volunteering to supervise the boss’s kid on work experience, the quiet quitters are avoiding the above and beyond, the hustle culture mentality. Instead, they are doing just enough in the office to keep up, then leaving work on time and muting #Slack. Lol.
My POV: Work-related stress or ‘Burnout’ begins with unceasing demands and unmeetable goals—the kinds that employers thrive on as they squeeze their employees not just for their time and labor, but for their obedience, humanity, and souls. This may include dysfunctional workplace dynamics, work-life imbalance and lack of support. Quiet quitting can help someone recover from #burnout.
This should not be considered as a means of getting revenge on a company. However, if somebody is burnt out, there should be a candid conversation about that, and it should be both ways.
Lastly, no one should be looked down upon for not doing extra work.

2 年One more thing to add here, is that even with get good salary and perks, if one's unable to see impact of work and efforts in the job that they do, especially if taking ownership of making processes better and resolve potential problems beforehand, they might feel burnt out, and quiet quitting would provide comfort to such employees. Companies should ensure that the tasks given must be deployed and applied with a motive to grow.

2 年Good effort. Glad to know people are taking a stand for themselves, sadly not everyone has the luxury to do so. Once saying 'No' to overwork without extra pay culture develops, it would benefit everyone.
