A New Way of Learning

Imagine children that have challenges in learning in the public school arena but through a school that teaches to the child and exposes his or hers gifts. Each person has a unique gift that makes their talent stand out among the rest of the world. I work in a public high school where each child goes through the same Common Core element. Their whole body is exasperated by the lack of creativity and real learning for this population.

Students with Special Needs may not be able to understand Algebra or in some cases be able to write a thesis, but these gifted students have some remarkable talents that can make a mark on this great world. Perhaps this special needs young man can find a cure for cancer, or be a master painter for all of us to enjoy.

My dream is to have a school for students who aren't successful in the public school arena. They would be taught to their learning style and build on the strengths they possess. I believe that even though I love teaching and of course reading and the basic subjects need to be acquired, not all students need to learn them. I've seen the lost looks on their faces and sadness it brings to them. The teacher exhibits much effort and concern to teach it but it only makes the child frustrated and the teacher feels like a failure. This is a dramatic representation of the problem, but the problem is real.

Why can't we as a society teach where each child is at and go forward. Teaching the skills to succeed in life and able to make a living. Why does this population have to take subjects they cannot learn and instead of giving them skills that they can succeed in?
