New Waves

Last week’s COP28 summit left a lot to be desired as far as stepping up to the crisis of climate change. Financial pledges will barely scratch the surface of what’s needed , fossil fuel interests were at odds with demand for a phaseout , and many scientists and researchers opted not to attend .

But one glimmer of hope we’ve been watching in the global discourse around a just climate transition is the promise of the blue economy.?

Ocean conservation and innovation are coming together to reveal exciting possibilities in the effort to mitigate the climate crisis. This recent story from Time, “The Ocean Is Our Best Chance to Survive Climate Change ,” hits the high notes citing the myriad opportunities that exist to buffer against rising sea levels, sequester carbon, develop sustainable food systems and energy systems, protect biodiversity and protect the livelihoods of people all over the globe. And corporations, investors, governments, and philanthropies are here for it.

At BBMG we’ve had thrilling opportunities to dive deep into ocean conservation and the blue economy through our work over the years with OceanX , Marine Stewardship Council , Ocean Conservancy and others. Time and again this work reminds us just how much remains unknown about the wonders of the ocean, and how in order to inspire the next generation to protect the ocean, to choose sustainable seafood, and to pursue environmental science careers, we have to first help them understand the awesomeness of the ocean.

In a new episode of our podcast, we speak with two ocean aficionados from the New England Aquarium and the 海洋管理委员会 about the role of brands and storytelling to capture imaginations and shift consumer behavior to protect and regenerate the ocean. At a time when progress on climate action feels so fraught, it’s exciting to be reminded of the great frontier of possibilities that lies beneath the blue.

Float on,
