New Video Reel

I know most video editors, DPs and motion graphic artists each year spend a significant amount of time pulling together their best clips to make their best reel. I used to do this for numerous production companies when I first began a career as a video editor, and eventually, I found myself year after year trying to make my own. Thing is...I started to get the feeling that an annual video reel was somewhat counterproductive (feel free to disagree). If the quality or nature of the work you do doesn't significantly change year to year, does it do one any good spending that time each year trying to put one out? Are you proud of the work you did this year? I think those simple questions should be the determining factor in deciding whether its time to start collecting those clips & building that epic timeline. I let my old reel breathe for (gasp) 4 years. Sounds crazy...Sh!t, it felt crazy! But during that my work had gone in another direction as I worked my way deeper into the fashion industry, but then I had the urge to get involved with video journalism & documentary. I couldn't figure out how the two would coexist in the same reel, and I wasn't keen on the idea of having too many reels.
