New UTM ranking guide from Unmanned Airspace: Switzerland tops the poll

We are publishing on the eve of the World ATM Congress our view of which countries are leading the race to develop a fully functioning UTM/U-space system. We have identified the top 20 countries who we think are pulling ahead of the rest of the pack (though we have cheated in identifying three countries in 20th position).

?By “fully functioning” we mean a UTM system in which all the key players – drone operators, regulators, UTM system suppliers – know when and where UTM services will be in place to support scalable and commercially viable BLVOS missions; what technologies will be used; what standards will form the basis to exchange safety critical data and what each player’s legal obligations and revenue streams look like. Very few countries are close to this. But congratulations to Switzerland which is at the moment leading the pack, with Belgium and Canada close behind.

Not everyone will be happy with our conclusions but they were arrived at with the very best of intentions, without fear or favour, and with some fairly scrupulous work done in the background to support the gradings. We will update our rankings in six months’ time.

More information on the index of UTM readiness, along with country-by-country progress reports, forecast revenue streams, market opportunities, values and competing business plans are available now in the latest edition of Unmanned Airspace’s?Market for UAV Traffic Management Services 2022-2006, edition 5.1 (?(https://www.unmannedairspace.info/uav-traffic-management-services/). Drop me a line if you want to know more about this report.

Look forward to meeting friends and colleagues in Madrid later this week.

Another proof that you make better progress as a team. In this case, the regulator and ANSP together have shown that true innovation is possible even in such an environment, which is normally perceived as rather conservative. And in the end, it's the actual implementation that counts, not just good concepts on paper. This is the best prerequisite for further learning and improvement.

No need to say it, having been one of those who started the effort, created the #SUSI and hired those who are making it great, this article fills me up with pride and joy!
