New Teams... Who's This?!

Happy Tuesday!

Are you part of the nearly 250+ million people using Microsoft Teams daily? If so, you probably have access to the new Microsoft Teams experience. Microsoft launched the "New Teams" this week and in this edition of Microsoft Tips we are going to discuss some of the key features and how you can enable the new experience for your organization.

The History of Teams

Since 2017, Microsoft Teams has seen exponential growth across the globe. Replacing its counterpart, Skype for Business, Teams now has over 280 million people relying on it daily to stay connected and collaborate. Teams' deep integration with Office 365 and third-party apps allow it to remain at the forefront of your working day and create a seamless experience no matter your working environment. Rapid adoption however has required Microsoft to push consistent updates and patches. The "New Teams" preview, which was launched on March 27th, 2023, is seemingly the platforms largest upgrade to-date.

What's Under the Hood?

Microsoft has hit the ground running this year with product announcements and releases. Just last week, Microsoft announced Copilot, a new AI assistant aiming to change the way we work. This week, Microsoft Teams is receiving more than your standard "face-lift" with the preview release of new Teams. They have been listening to our feedback and are delivering a reimagined version of Teams that is faster, simpler, more flexible, and smarter. Let's take a look at some of the improvements:

  1. Speed has always been a grudge for many Teams users. In the new Teams, Microsoft re-architected the framework to utilize Fluent UI, React, WebView2, and changed the client data layer. This information can get "techy" really fast, so I am going to refer to this article if you want to read more about the bits and bytes of the Teams platform. Microsoft Teams: Advantages of the new architecture - Microsoft Community Hub. Based on testing by GigaOm, here are the core stats everyone should know:

  • Install app up to 3X faster
  • Launch app up to 2X faster
  • Join meetings up to 2X faster
  • Switch chats/channels up to 1.7X faster
  • Consume up to 50% less memory
  • Consume up to 70% less disk space

2. Simplicity is the name of the game for most Teams users, and Microsoft knows it. In the new Teams, Microsoft addressed some of these concerns with a new design and user experience. Teams' channels will be one of the biggest changes you'll see in the new preview. Posts will now read from top-to-bottom and behave more like a traditional post-and-reply thread. Users will also benefit from better mentioning features and enhanced notifications. For users that are frequently in meetings, Microsoft has made significant upgrades to presenter views as well, allowing you to see all of your meeting participants and who is actively engaging in the meeting.

3. Flexibility for users that are apart of multiple organizations or tenants was a major pain-point within the classic version of Teams. In new Teams, the authentication methods have been updated allowing you to stay signed in across all organizations. Notifications will also be streamlined and follow you no-matter where you are working.

4. Smarter users = more productive users. The new Teams experience will be the foundation for next-gen AI experiences. Combining the existing integrations to Office 365 with new applications such as Microsoft Loop and Copilot, the new Teams experience will allow for users to put time back into their days.
