New Study: Airline Pilot #3 Most Stressful Profession

It was not a surprise for me to see airline pilot ranked #3 on the list of most stressful jobs from CareerCast’s recent research. Here is the 2017 list:

1.Enlisted military personnel. Serving as an U.S. Navy Seal to a Army Ranger, is obviously comes with the risk of physical harm to oneself or another, for whom the professional is directly responsible.

2. Firefighter. Much like military personnel, firefighters put themselves at risk to save people and property every time they get into action.

3. Airline pilot. While flying is a lot safer than driving, the pressure pilots are under to fly hundreds of people to safety with considering the catastrophic consequences if they can't. Read on to find out more about this.

4. Police officer. A police officer faces similar stress to military personnel and firefighters.

5. Event coordinator. Planning a wedding sounds like fun, right? Until something goes wrong, and you find yourself faced with an angry bridezilla .

6. Newspaper reporter. Working under tight deadlines and the fear of lawsuits or layoffs may cause stress, add financial stress caused by the fact that  many writers are paid  based on the number of clicks their articles receive.

7. Corporate executive. Running a company is not something for everyone and the pressure is always on, as you can really never afford to switch-off.

8. Public relations executive. Like journalists, working in the public eye contributes to the high stress ranking of this field, as does facing regular and strict deadlines.

9. Taxi driver. Taxi drivers are constantly commuting, driving in traffic and bad weather, and also face increased competition from online transportation companies, including Uber and Lyft,

10. Broadcaster. Much like newspaper reporters and PR executives, broadcasters face deadlines and the fear of lawsuits. But they also have something else stressing them out: A drop in their job outlook by nine percent this year, according to the CareerCast.

These are the 11 factors considered when compiling CareerCast most stressful jobs report:

? Travel

? Career Growth Potential

? Physical Demands

? Environmental Conditions

? Hazards Encountered

? Meeting the Public

? Competition

? Risk of Death or Grievous Injury

? Immediate Risk of Another’s Life

? Deadlines

? Working in the Public Eye

Travel can be very stressful, whether it’s over long distances as an Airline Pilot, or covering a city as a Taxi Driver.

Taxi Driver makes the list of most stressful jobs both for the constant commuting, but also because of the inherent danger that comes with driving on our busy roads. With self-driving cars on the horizon this profession will not only disappear over the next few years but AI (Artificial Intelligence) will also make our roads a lot safer.

In a number of other articles I have talked about the stress pilots are under in this very demanding profession and how the human factor has had a major role in causing many accidents. I have seen the profession morph from a well paid job, offering a good life balance into a poorly paid health debilitating profession. In my book Health4Flyers I explain what a pilot can do to help stay healthy while flying across time zones, coping with bad cabin air, radiation and airplane food. Will AI enter the cockpit? In recent article I mention I think AI will enter the cockpit, enhancing flight safety. With one pilot in the cockpit, teamed-up with either a robot and/or a form of AI, will allow airlines to pay their pilots better and also give them more time off.

In this video I talk about the co-pilot of the future and how disuptive innovation will improve things for aviation:

One of the problems traveling with the airlines is the fact you have no control over the pilots well-being. Some rostering departments are putting these men and women thorugh some grueling flights, flying through time zones and giving them minimum rest. Add to the fact the money is no where near what it used to be and many pilots find themselves under financial pressure, finding it difficult to have the energy to create other revenue streams.

Using a private jet not only gives you the advantage of saving you stacks of time but can also help you stay healthy. However, some private jet pilots are under just as much stress and sometimes even more. Some pilots I speak to are on standby 24/7 365 days a year and always on the look-out for a new job. As I alawys say, the private jet needs to stay private (and safe) and to do that you need to have a system in place to attract the best and keep them.

The pilot profession is adventureous and challenging and I always enjoy flying around the world but in order for it to be sfare and more enjoyable some of the above stress can be easily taken out of the equation by becoming a member of the healthy flyers tribe...
