A new step ahead for Romania’s Public Healthcare System
The Installation of the da Vinci? Xi Robotic Surgery System at Emergency County Hospital Bistri?a
The healthcare landscape in Romania has achieved a significant breakthrough: the installation of the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System at Emergency County Hospital Bistri?a, Romania, marking the third public hospital to implement a da Vinci program. This milestone not only elevates the quality of care but also sets the stage for a future where advanced medical technology becomes a standard across the nation’s healthcare system.
With this addition, Romania now boasts 21 active da Vinci robotic programs, a testament to the growing adoption of robotic surgery and its undeniable benefits for both patients and healthcare providers.
The newly installed Da Vinci system in Bistri?a began its journey with a groundbreaking surgery: a partial nephrectomy for a 74-year-old patient with a kidney tumor, performed just 24 hours after installation, underscoring the readiness of the hospital team and the robust clinical and service support of da Vinci programs.
Looking ahead, the hospital plans to expand the program to include specialists in general surgery, thoracic surgery, and obstetrics-gynecology, further broadening the scope of robotic interventions.
“Bistri?a is set to enter a new era of minimally invasive robotic surgery, marking a significant advancement in medical care. Compared to traditional surgical methods, robotic surgery causes significantly less trauma to the body. Currently, we have one certified team specialized in Urology, but in the coming months, we plan to expand accreditation to general surgery and other specialties. What began as a dream years ago has now become a reality, what we are trying to prove is that robotic surgery is rather than a luxury, a vital necessity for the public healthcare system.” - said Dr. R?zvan Cou?i, Coordinator of the Robotic Surgery Department.
We have ahead of us the important work of providing patients with the superior outcomes of robotic surgery in a sustainable manner. Both the Hospital and SOFMEDICA commit to serving this mission.
The Case for a National Robotic Surgery Reimbursement Program
Romania’s healthcare system has long struggled with limited access to advanced medical care, especially for patients in the public sector. Implementing a National Reimbursement Program for Robotic Surgery would not only address this gap but also set a benchmark for equitable and efficient healthcare.
This could revolutionize the healthcare system by delivering improved patient outcomes, as scientific evidence highlights the ability of robotic surgery to minimize complications and promote faster recovery. Such a program would also improve financial accessibility, reducing the burden on patients and ensuring that income differences no longer determine access to life-saving treatments. Over time, this approach would prove financially sustainable by lowering overall healthcare costs through a reduction in complications, re-hospitalizations, and the need for extended care. Furthermore, by adopting best practices from European countries, Romania could position itself as a leader in healthcare innovation, setting a regional standard for equitable and advanced medical care.
