A new SRT initiative for young people

Many do not view a career in the theatre as a viable option for their future. We want to change that belief as theatre is in fact an interesting and purpose filled career for young Singaporeans.??

?As the industry contributes a significant value to the creative economy, there is a need for capacity-building platforms in the industry for more professional development and engagement for young people as they zoom in on their career choices.

To support this agenda, SRT is launching Theatre360 - a theatre industry experience for young people (aged 13 to 21 years old) 11 to 14 May 2023. Theatre360 spans over four days with panel discussions, performances and workshops from seasoned professionals, industry organizations and new emerging artists and companies.?

?"We are delighted to support SRT's inaugural launch of Theatre360, which will nurture and empower budding artists in Singapore," said Vandna Dawar Ramchandani, APAC Head of Corporate Philanthropy at Bloomberg. "At Bloomberg, we believe the arts and cultural institutions serve as anchors for communities and are proud to be partners of SRT since 2011 to inspire, engage and entertain audiences through world class theatrical productions and learning programmes."

Says Jelaine Ng Sha-Men, Resident Learning & Engagement/Project Manager of Theatre360, “My dilemma as a budding theatre-maker was the same as any artist growing up in Singapore. Theatre was considered an after-school co-curricular activity, and not thought of as a serious or practical means of living. However, just like any young person with enough determination to “defy the world” to continue pursuing the arts, I had little knowledge of how to begin my next step into the industry.

?I envisioned a platform bringing seasoned professionals and budding theatre-makers together to challenge themselves artistically, show off their craft, and make meaningful connections for future collaborations and to empower young people.

My hope is that, piloting this initiative, with support from theatre veterans, young people can gain valuable tools to become the artist they want to be. Theatre360 will be their starting point where they learn to utilise their art to find their voice.

We are also excited to initiate a Youth Ambassador programme where the youths are offered the opportunity to be involved in the theatre scene as the voice of the future through SRT.”

Adds Charlotte Nors, Managing Director?SRT, “I am very excited about being able to bring this new idea to life. We have, for over 25 years, via The Young Company, planted many seeds and launched many careers; But it doesn't stop there. We are thrilled that this initiative led by our younger colleagues helmed by Jelaine is getting support from Bloomberg which enabled us to launch Theatre360.”
