Special Issue Information: The field of thermodynamics emerged at the dawn of the industrial revolution motivated by the desire to optimize the performance of the society-changing invention of the time, the steam engine. Since that time, heat engines, as well as refrigerators and other thermal machines, have remained as paradigmatic systems for exploring and understanding thermodynamic properties. Quantum devices are poised to be one of the revolutionary technologies of our time, exploiting quantum phenomena to perform beyond the capabilities of their classical counterparts in applications such as computing, sensing, and communication. Concurrently, the field of quantum thermodynamics has developed with the main objective of understanding the interplay of heat, work, and information in quantum systems. Following historical tradition,?quantum heat engines?have emerged as a central topic in quantum thermodynamics, providing crucial insights into how the concepts of classical thermodynamics can be extended to nanoscale, quantum systems.

The study of quantum heat engines and refrigerators is a vibrant and growing area of research. Along with numerous theoretical analyses, pioneering experimental results have demonstrated the implementation of quantum thermal machines in trapped ions, single spins, nitrogen vacancy centers, cold quantum gases, and more. The goal of this Special Issue is to serve as a venue to gather new results relating to quantum thermal machines, including but not limited to proposals for new platforms, reports of experimental implementations, performance and optimization analyses, studies of the impact of quantum phenomena on device performance, and examinations of the role of information and measurement.???

Keywords: quantum thermodynamics; quantum heat engines; quantum information engines; quantum statistical mechanics; open quantum systems; quantum work and heat??
