The DA’s office under Chesa Boudin was supportive of a resentencing of Ronnie Louvier, now 37 and serving a life sentence at Solano Prison.? Louvier has maintained that he didn’t shoot 17-year-old Marquise Washington in the Fillmore district in 2008.
2. The Sinister and Racist Practice Infecting Death Penalty Juries
Every person accused of a crime is entitled to a jury of their peers. While this is a fundamental right, it is not the case in death penalty trials. Jury selection in death penalty trials is unconstitutionally discriminatory and exclusionary because of a process called “death qualification,” which prosecutors use to exclude jurors.
3. Black Lives Matter, Activist Groups Hail One of ‘Fairest’ Bail Systems in the U.S.
A new bail process, created by Shelby County, TN, will make the county’s system one of the fairest in the nation, supporters claim.?
The latest system includes creation of a new bail hearing courtroom; individualized bail hearings with counsel no later than three days after a person’s arrest; a person’s financial circumstances to be under exam prior to any decision; reminders of court; and, only as a last resort, imposition of secured money bail.
4. The Sentencing Project Releases New Report Showcasing Rise and Fall of Private Prisons
The Sentencing Project released a new fact sheet last week showing a 15 percent increase in private prison populations over the last 20 years, yet a decline since 2012.
