Good day, readers!
Intra-Asia trade is undergoing significant shifts, and it's more than just new routes—it's a broader narrative of adaptation in a volatile market. Amid fluctuating demand and rate uncertainties, leading carriers like Hapag-Lloyd and CMA CGM are stepping up with bold moves and intensifying their focus on intra-Asia networks. This strategic expansion includes new services and port calls tailored to enhance connectivity and efficiency within the region. For instance, Hapag-Lloyd’s Vietnam-Cambodia-China (VCS) and India Asia Express (IAX) services align with the upcoming Gemini Cooperation partnership with Maersk, promising smoother integration with trans-Pacific and Asia networks.
CMA CGM’s CNC Line is also reinvigorating its NKT service, offering faster connections between North and Southeast Asia and leveraging the revamped Ocean Alliance network. However, a Drewry analysis highlights softening freight rates on these routes as volumes show no pre-Lunar New Year surge. Experts warn about a potential rate war while pointing out that rates still have room to decline before returning to pre-COVID-19 levels, particularly with the reshuffling of alliances and summer peak season uncertainty.
Despite rate fluctuations, intra-Asia capacity remains tight due to weather disruptions, port congestion, and vessel delays. This has led to rate increases in corridors like Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia. Reflecting on this volatile landscape raises a key question for the industry: can such innovative strategies effectively counter the challenges of sluggish volumes and fluctuating demand while maintaining a balance between competitive pricing and supply chain agility
