New Series ... called : Did You Know?

I will be posting a new series over the coming weeks entitled

" Did You Know? "

it will include details pertinent to the medical industry and infection prevention. Most if not all of the material will be posted in short article links. Please share or comment. Thank you.

Here's the first Did You Know?   >>>>  Approximately HAI 100,000 deaths occur each year in the U.S. and cost $20 billion!

I followed the link and read that approximately 1.7 million HAIs occur in U.S. hospitals each year....that is a lot of infections! However, I tend to challenge that number and yet I do not want to make light of the number either. Truly there are thousands of patient dying each year due to infections that could have been prevented. My challenge; I am a clinical manager and today we have a hospital acquired cdiff. However, it really wasn't acquire. Last month, the patient was admitted in the hospital and diagnosis with cdiff. The patient was discharge and readmitted 2 weeks later. The patient did not have symptoms for the first 2.5 days and we were not able to test. Then on the 3rd day we collected a sample that tested positive for cdiff. This is considered a HAI; when in fact we believe that the infection was present at admission but we had no way to confirm the presenting infection without a sample.
