9 年I followed the link and read that approximately 1.7 million HAIs occur in U.S. hospitals each year....that is a lot of infections! However, I tend to challenge that number and yet I do not want to make light of the number either. Truly there are thousands of patient dying each year due to infections that could have been prevented. My challenge; I am a clinical manager and today we have a hospital acquired cdiff. However, it really wasn't acquire. Last month, the patient was admitted in the hospital and diagnosis with cdiff. The patient was discharge and readmitted 2 weeks later. The patient did not have symptoms for the first 2.5 days and we were not able to test. Then on the 3rd day we collected a sample that tested positive for cdiff. This is considered a HAI; when in fact we believe that the infection was present at admission but we had no way to confirm the presenting infection without a sample.
