New season of TMHCC’s Transaction Risk Insurance Academy launching Today
Unlike many insurance products, Transaction Risk Insurance (TRI) is complex and relies upon collaboration for its success. This is why we are launching a new season of our Young Brokers Academy, this time expanding its reach to include other young M&A professionals.???
For TRI to work effectively, there are many factors to consider. TRI is often global in nature, its use is subject to extreme time pressures, it has the need for transparency in an often-opaque process and it requires the buy-in and collaboration of various parties (with competing priorities).
Despite these challenges, TRI plays a vital role in getting M&A deals over the line and acquirers and their advisers are turning to the product to ensure their acquisition is completed smoothly.
As interest grows, the insurance industry responds, and we are seeing an increasing number of professionals ‘cutting their insurance teeth’ in transaction insurance or making the switch to this exciting and growing part of the market.
This new generation of talent is hungry for knowledge and insight, and ready to build the relationships that are so vital to the successful transaction of insurance. To bridge the gap, Tokio Marine HCC (TMHCC) has created the Young Brokers Academy webinars.
“Our market has gone through a period of rapid growth and the insurance sector has responded by going on a recruitment drive to meet the demand,” says Birgit Rummel , Transaction Risk Insurance Manager for DACH & CEE at TMHCC, who is one of the key drivers behind this initiative.
“That has resulted in a good mix of expertise entering the market, with professionals arriving from the worlds of insurance, law, tax, finance, and consulting. What they perhaps lack is a more rounded view of M&A insurance and how underwriters approach the risks. This is why the Academy was set up.”
Drawing on decades of legal, insurance and M&A experience within the TMHCC team, the Academy content covers a broad range of issues affecting the market today with a keen emphasis on the practicalities of securing cover and the thought process underwriters go through to provide it.
“The sessions are intended to be quite short to allow brokers to take time away from clients to educate themselves about this market in concise online snapshots dedicated to a certain topic. It’s really about how the whole process works – how we underwrite, how we approach risk and how we define and apply our appetite,” says Birgit.
The content covers everything from how financial statements are assessed and can affect coverage to the claims process and the challenges posed by international deals.
While transaction risk insurance can be a complex area to grasp, the content is always delivered in a way that makes it simple for even the greenest of brokers to understand.
“When you start out in insurance or enter a new sector, there is so much information to absorb, and it can be difficult to get your head around it all. That’s the gap we want to close,” says Birgit.
“We want to demystify the underwriting process and explain to brokers how our appetite is defined, what we need to see on the proposal form, what kind of risks are going to be difficult to place and what is going to get our attention.”
“When you enter a new market, you are often less exposed to the risk selection process, and it can be difficult to understand what is going through an underwriter’s mind when they are looking at a risk. The Academy is a rare opportunity for brokers to get that access, and to understand an underwriter’s thinking,” she adds.
M&A transactions are complex risks seeking complex risk solutions, so an educated, collaborative approach is essential if the insurance industry is going to provide the protection demanded. The Young Brokers Academy is TMHCC’s latest contribution to satisfying that need.
Tomorrow, the 10th season of the Academy will be launched, this time focused on the expanding influence of US-style coverage in European M&A insurance. The webinars are free-of-charge and now open to all junior M&A professionals, including brokers, lawyers, and advisors. Don’t miss the opportunity to take this guided tour through the world of transaction risk, supported by some of the most experienced operators in the market.
