THE NEW SCIENCE OF SAFETY
THE NEW SCIENCE OF SAFETY?
Count this blog post as “Lagniappe” or, as we say in Louisiana, a little something extra. I can think of no other area where Occupational DNA? or ODNA? can play an important role besides employee safety. Yes, we can hire better managers and salespeople who can sell more, and all these are important. But nothing is more important than a loved one returning home safely from a day on the job.?
Employing a worker with unsafe tendencies on your team can be very costly. For existing employees, being aware of your worker’s personality risk areas is important in mitigating the potential risks they can pose to themselves, others on their team, and the organization.
Today, organizations are providing the workforce with the most advanced safety equipment in the history of modern-day risk management. This novel approach includes renewed processes, procedures, and protocols mainly directed toward one goal, i.e., safety. Yet, accidents still occur in the workplace, and the numbers are more alarming. A study has concluded that workplace injuries exceed $70 billion, and human factors cause 90% of workplace incidents. These numbers outline the urgency for organizations to consider the “New Science of Safety, SQ or Safety Quotient.” Everyone has an SQ score, no matter their work, and everyone is hardwired with a defined risk tolerance score. The importance of SQ is as evident as that of IQ (Intelligence Quotient) and EI (Emotional Intelligence).??
Despite the implemented safety equipment process, procedures, and protocols, there are still rising mishaps, which have pivoted the progressive companies to focus on the root cause and understanding the SQ of their people. The question is, how will you know?
Until recently, predicting a worker’s risk tolerance, inherent safety traits, instinctive urges, and natural impulses was impossible. I call these our “hard wiring” or “default settings,” They drive our safety behavior. For the first time in assessment history, gaining advanced insight into one’s default settings is possible. You can predict how an employee will most likely act on the job. You can then leverage the employee’s strengths, minimize risks, and be aware of areas for improvement. This new science of safety assessments is designed to uncover these default settings through a specialized set of questions.?
As I mentioned earlier in earlier blogs, when discussing X-rays and MRIs. At the same time, an MRI-type employee assessment can deliver in-depth need-to-know information; the X-Ray style assessment is essential in predicting strengths and risks by providing relevant results to our frontline workforce.?
The first and only major assessment tool that can accurately predict a person’s safety quotient and match the safety component of his/her ODNA? is the AVP Assessment. AVP stands for attitude, values, and personality. The beauty of AVP is that it works perfectly with the ODNA? model process by matching the candidate’s safety to the safety model of the job. Let’s face it; some work requires a much deeper focus, patience, and distractibility than others. AVP with ODNA? will and does make the workplace safer, happier, and more productive than ever.?
So, just how does the magic of the AVP Assessment solution work? The AVP solution measures a candidate for different employability factors after they complete a 10-15-minute assessment. Remember, this is a frontline X-Ray style assessment. It’s imperative that frontline worker assessments be kept under the 30-minute window to complete. By doing so, we have a much higher completion rate.?
After the candidate has taken the assessment, the system administrator may select from a number of reports to be generated, including the Safety Quotient Report, Driver Safety Report, Work Values Report, Workplace Profile Report, and the Cognitive Quotient Report. AVP Reporting Suite identifies high-risk personality traits that lead to workplace incidents.?
It’s been shown to reduce incidents by as much as 20%. The major report, The Safety Quotient, reports on six criteria: resistance, anxiety, patience, distraction, impulsiveness, and adventurism.?
