New is Scary Until We Embrace It

Just because we’ve let go of an abusive relationship doesn’t mean we aren’t going to pick another abusive relationship or interview for another job we don’t like. I’m always amazed when I see or hear about people staying in situations that aren’t healthy for them.
When I do workshops I ask the participants two questions: “How many of you know of a person in a relationship that they shouldn’t be in?” Everybody raises their hand. “How about somebody in a job, and you know they are overqualified.” Once again, everyone raises their hand. Then I bring up the question: “Why doesn’t that person let go and leave?”
The group consensus boils down to fear of the new.
“The new” is scary until we become confident enough to be willing to embrace it. This is why I talk so much about the importance of being willing to do something different. If you want something different, what are you doing to change? It’s not about trying to be successful. It’s about what we are doing to become successful.
The definition of success is unique to the individual.
Do you agree?

Doing something different, new can be scary especially when one has been in the same essentially toxic environment for a very long time, even though one moves from one job to another within the profession! It takes a lot of courage & determination, internal strength & power to make that change, try the new & different. It also requires a lot of faith, resiliency & prayers. When we know better we should do better regardless of our status & position in life professionally & personally in order to grow & learn without compromising our integrity. Thank you for this mind stimulating post.
