NOT A NEW SAFETY MESSAGE BUT A NOW SAFETY MESSAGE
When it comes to delivering safety messages at site Toolbox and Pre-Start meetings I do not tire of telling attendees the same thing over and over. You see, as safety professionals, we often feel that every time we present a safety message at a Toolbox Meeting we have to have some brand new message or safety insight that's going to knock the socks off everyone in the room and make them go, "Wow I never knew that." However when we are delivering Toolbox talks 3 or 4 times a week that gets kind of hard to do week after week.
What is important to remember is that workers do not always need a "new safety message" and that sometimes all they need is a "now safety message". A "now safety message" is a message or information that is applicable to them right now. It does not matter that you spoke about completing plant pre-start inspections last week or correct wearing of PPE. That same message may be applicable to a person or persons on that day. People may need to hear the same thing over and over again before it sinks in.
So do not be pressurised into having to come up with a new Toolbox talk topic every toolbox. If we deliver our message in an innovative and participative manner we will get the message through.
By all means bring new topics into Toolbox meetings but do not feel that you have to do it every time.

8 年Andrew, Might I suggest your approach to delivering 'Now a safety message' be also considered for the management of projects, at operational and tactical levels, not just field personnel, engineers and contractors. Management at those levels often have generic safety KPIs in mind, rather than project specific KPIs and have not thought about safety leadership, they are responsible for delivery, on unique projects.

8 年Also useful to allow the attendees to put their own information from a project's daily experiences, into the presentations, to a wider audiences. Personal buy-in.
