THE NEW RPL/HY
A SMALL AND EASY-TO-HANDLE PLANER FOR EXCAVATORS, PERFECT FOR A VARIETY OF ROAD MAINTENANCE JOBS
FAE’s line of road planers, launched at Bauma 2022, has been expanding, with new models for 60-135 hp skid steers (RPL/SSL, RPL/SSL/DT, RPM/SSL) and 8-14 ton excavators (RPL/EX). The new product for 2024 is
the RPL/HY, a fixed-tooth road planer for light-duty excavators. We spoke with Angelo Piazzi , the engineer who designed this model.
What are the main technical differences between the RPL/HY and its older sibling, the RPL/EX?
The RPL/HY is smaller and lighter, to work with 5-7.5 ton excavators. To reproduce the RPL/EX on a smaller scale, it was necessary to redesign everything from scratch, starting with the rotor, frame, and all the components. That is how we were able to create a model that is exceptionally light and easy to handle, which ensures stability for the excavator it’s hooked up to and makes it extremely easy to use. It is a very sturdy machine.
What are its stats?
The operating depth of the RPL/HY is 12 cm, and the operating width is 30 cm. The working depth is manually adjustable with an actuator.
What type of motor does it have?
The RPL/HY has a Bosch Rexroth direct drive motor, which acts as a motor and rotor support.
The motor is smaller than the motor in the RPL/EX to provide optimal cutting speed for the range of excavators for which it was developed.

How is it used?
The RPL/HY is suitable for a variety of roadwork applications. Small and maneuverable, it was designed for shredding asphalt near sewer covers and other obstacles, like steps and uneven ground. It is also perfect for small jobs, road maintenance, making crosswalks, and any situation that requires working very close to obstacles because the excavator arm allows for access to hard-to-reach areas.
Who worked on the design?
I was involved in the different design phases. The technical/management department, managed by Alessio Chini, handled the planning (managing the bill of materials, creating the codes, organizing the production stages and assembly instructions).
The RPL/HY were unveiled at Intermat, the major construction and civil engineering exhibition held in Paris every three years, this year from 24 to 27 April. The new selection joins the RPL/EX for 8–14 ton excavators, to further expand FAE’s line of Construction products.
