New Resource Helps SCV Residents Find Careers Closer to Home
The Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) is home to many top employers in a wide variety of industries like medical devices & biotechnology, aerospace & defense, digital media & entertainment, tech, and advanced manufacturing. Despite the fact that SCV residents are typically highly skilled and highly educated, local employers often note that they have trouble hiring talent that lives locally, and they frequently have to cast a wide net to fill open positions.
To help address this issue, the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation (SCVEDC) has created a new job board as a resource for residents who would like to quit their commute and find a career closer to home called LiveWorkSCV.com. Whether you are just starting out and seeking an entry level job, or are a corporate manager with decades of experience under your belt, LiveWorkSCV.com will help connect you to local opportunities.
This resource is free for job seekers and allows you to create a profile, link to your LinkedIn account, and upload a resume. Furthermore, if you are an employer, we are offering Santa Clarita Valley businesses this resource at no cost until 2020!
Census data shows that Americans travel an average of 26 minutes each day to work, which is 52 minutes per day, four hours and 20 hours per week or nine days per year. I suspect that many SCV residents have much longer commutes than that!
Here are 5 benefits of reclaiming at least a few of those nine lost days:
1. Reduce the Chance of Getting in an Accident & Save Money on Gas
It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure this one out. Less time spent in your car = less opportunity to get caught up in an accident. Think about how much money you spend on gas each month. Now think about spending that money on something more meaningful (or fun!).
2. Minimize Stress & Improve Health
Yes, your commute affects your mental health. Commutes are stressful, isolating, and can sour your day right from the get-go. Besides reducing your stress, reclaiming those lost nine days means more time for you to sleep, exercise, and make healthy food choices.
3. Become a More Reliable Employee & Increase Productivity
When it’s easier for you to get to work, it’s easier for you to get to work on time. Fewer late starts. Fewer absences. Happier bosses. If you’re in a better mood when you get to work, you’re more likely to think clearly and be productive throughout the day.
4. Improve Work Life / Home Life Balance
When you live 10-15 minutes from work, taking your lunch break at home becomes way easier and you can carve out more dinners at home. It also becomes more feasible to get home in time to take the kids to extracurricular activities (or, hey, even be present to support them!). At least one study has linked longer commutes to an increased chance of getting divorced. Romantic relationships aside, when you get to spend more time together, you have more chances to show your friends and family the love they seek and deserve.
5. Improve Overall Quality of Life
Technically, achieving any of the above would improve your quality of life, but we’re saying it again here because it’s that important. Something as simple as travel shouldn’t hamper how happy you are.
The Santa Clarita Valley provides the perfect live/work/play environment, and there are many companies looking for local, skilled talent and many residents who are ready to quit their commute. Check out www.LiveWorkSCV.com today.
