|| New Research - Secondary injury in young athletes post ACL 30-40 times greater ||
Here in Australia our national sport of Australian Rules Football (sorry NSW/QLD) likely see's more ACL injuries per capita of young athletes than any other sport. One of the biggest problems faced is the effective management of these individuals as a repeat ACL injury can mean up to 24 months + out of the game costing huge amounts of time and money, not to mention the heartache of potential careers being ruined.
The following research by Myer et al looked at the risk of secondary injury in young athletes post ACL reconstruction.
Their findings were "These combined data indicate that nearly 1 in 4 young athletic patients who sustain an ACL injury and return to high-risk sport will go on to sustain another ACL injury at some point in their career, and they will likely sustain it early in the return-to-play period. The high rate of secondary injury in young athletes who return to sport after ACLR equates to a 30 to 40 times greater risk of an ACL injury compared with uninjured adolescents."
This highlights the importance of effective Injury Risk Assessment and Functional Performance Testing similar to those we use with the M.A.T (Movement Assessment Tool) particularly in younger athletes post ACL reconstruction.
