New Research Discovers Info About Biology Behind Sundowning Syndrome

If you are a caregiver of someone with dementia, chances are you understand what sundowning syndrome more than most. As Science Daily explains, this is a sudden worsening of symptoms which is governed by the body's internal clock (circadian rhythm). These symptoms often include aggression and confusion. This means that during evenings, those with conditions such as dementia can suffer even more. While researchers and medical professionals have known about this symptom for years, they didn't think it was possible to control it. However, a new development may prove otherwise.

A team of neuroscientists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) conducted a study showing that the circadian clock controls aggression and has identified the neurons that regulate the circadian clock. There is evidence that neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and dementia compromise these neuropathways, thus increasing aggression at certain times of day. This new discovery shows that the potential to be able to stop sundowning syndrome may be possible yet.

Senior Author Clifford B. Saper, MD, Chair of the Department of Neurology at BIDMC states that sundowning is a primary reason why many people need round-the-clock and even professional care. But if researchers can understand this singular aspect of the disease, the quality of life of those that suffer from dementia can improve, as well as their independence.
