In mid-November 2024, the release of Google Chrome 131 for Windows, Linux, and macOS took place. This version includes new features, bug fixes, and the resolution of twelve vulnerabilities, one of which is classified as high-priority.
Key Changes and Enhancements
Improved PDF Viewer
The built-in PDF viewer now supports advanced text recognition in scanned documents. Using an integrated OCR engine based on machine learning, Chrome automatically converts text images into an editable text representation, making it easier to highlight, search, and copy information.
Enhanced Memory Checks
New options have been added to the PartitionAlloc memory distribution system for activating additional checks that block vulnerabilities related to the use of already freed memory areas. These checks are disabled by default but can be activated for improved security.
Updates to Certificate Store
Trust in the Entrust certificate authority has been revoked in the Chrome Root Store due to multiple violations. TLS certificates issued after November 11, 2024, will be considered invalid, highlighting the importance of adhering to security standards.
Innovations for Android
In the Android version, users can now connect third-party providers for autofilling forms and saving passwords without relying on the Accessibility API. Synchronization with Google accounts has also been simplified.
Memory Savings Features
Experimental memory-saving modes have been added: Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum, allowing users to choose how inactive tabs are suspended based on available system memory.
Tools for Web Developers
The developer tools have been enhanced with new performance analysis features. An experimental panel with an AI assistant is included for answering debugging questions and clarifying CSS-related issues.
Support for Quantum Cryptography
New key encapsulation mechanisms have been implemented in TLS 1.3 and QUIC, making the protocols more resistant to attacks from quantum computers.
Image Search with Google Lens
The image search feature now supports overlaying translations in another language, facilitating work with texts in images.
Conclusion
The release of Google Chrome 131 demonstrates significant improvements in security, performance, and user convenience for both users and developers. We eagerly await the next version—Chrome 132, scheduled for January 2025.

3 个月Natan, I really enjoyed your article on the new features in Google Chrome 131. While I've recently transitioned to using Vivaldi for more control and personalization, it's great to see that Chrome continues to evolve and improve. The enhancements, especially in security and the PDF viewer, are impressive and show a commitment to user needs. It’s reassuring to know that competition in the browser market leads to such advancements. Keep up the great work!
